2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.
2022 Lincoln Navigator Reviews SummarySometimes, only a full-size SUV will do. Among the handful of large luxury models available, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator stands apart with its classically elegant design, robust towing capacity, and soothing comfort in all three rows of seats. For the 2022 Navigator, Lincoln makes numerous changes to update the SUV’s styling, comfort, technology, safety, and driving dynamics. In short, the facelift has revived the aging Navigator, keeping it competitive against newer rivals.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar traditional SUV styling. It featured a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile. However, the Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel centre caps had an acrylic glass covering to protect the “Wagoneer” logo. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent front and rear suspension, with an aluminum hood and doors, and a composite tailgate to save weight. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered high-end materials and convenience features, including 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests. Nappa leather upholstery was standard, with higher-grade Palermo leather available, along with aluminum and American Walnut wood trim.
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator underwent subtle styling changes, including new headlights, taillights, and wheel designs. The front end was restyled with an Audi-esque grille, which some felt reduced its elegance and presence. Despite this, the Navigator's updates were largely successful. Inside, it dazzled with quality materials and a mid-century modern design, featuring Lincoln’s Constellation instrumentation and infotainment display theme. The new Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen display was a significant upgrade, offering a user-friendly interface and voice recognition system. The Navigator continued to offer standard and long-wheelbase styles, with the Reserve trim level sold in Canada. The U.S.-spec Navigator Black Label featured a new Central Park theme with a unique green interior. The Navigator's adaptive-damping suspension and electronic brake booster were updated for improved ride quality and braking response.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. It featured cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency and was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer could accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds, despite its 2,900-kilogram weight. It came standard with four-wheel drive, including the Quadra-Drive II system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system was also standard, offering adjustable ride height for various driving conditions. The Grand Wagoneer boasted 25.4 centimetres of ground clearance and could ford up to 60 centimetres of water. However, its size and weight made it less agile, with a bouncy ride at higher speeds and imprecise steering.
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator retained its twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. It was equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive in Canada. The Navigator's towing capacity ranged from 3,674 to 3,765 kilograms, depending on configuration. The adaptive-damping suspension featured Road Preview technology, which prepared the suspension for bumps and potholes. The Navigator handled well on smooth roads and shrugged off imperfect pavement, thanks to its 22-inch wheels. The electronic brake booster improved brake pedal feel and response. The Navigator's fuel consumption was rated at 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, with an observed average of 12.6 L/100 km during testing.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than its competitors, but less space in the front row. Cargo space was generous, with 775 litres behind the third row and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. However, with all rear seats folded, its 2,667 litres of cargo space was less than rivals. The Grand Wagoneer had a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins. Forward visibility was somewhat limited, but the standard 360-degree camera system helped mitigate this issue.
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator featured exceptionally comfortable heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats with 30-way power adjustments. The second-row captain’s chairs were also heated, ventilated, and massaging, with an upgraded Lincoln Play rear-seat entertainment system. Third-row passengers enjoyed roomy accommodations on a supportive seat. The Navigator offered generous storage and cargo space, with 546 litres behind the third row and 1,627 litres with it folded. The long-wheelbase Navigator L provided even more cargo volume. The Navigator's independent rear suspension contributed to its comfortable third-row seating.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer came with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. It supported simultaneous pairing for two Bluetooth-enabled phones and offered a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system featured an Android-based operating system and over-the-air updates. However, the screen response was slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced a new Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen display. It supported Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, with a user-friendly interface and voice recognition system. The Navigator's rear-seat entertainment system was upgraded with Amazon Fire TV, providing access to streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime. The optional 28-speaker Revel 3D audio system delivered exceptional sound quality. The Navigator's infotainment system allowed for extensive customization and user profiles.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring, with a hands-free version planned for future release.
The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced new driver assistance systems, including Intersection Assist, Active Park Assist 2.0, and ActiveGlide. A surround-view camera system was newly standard. Intersection Assist could automatically brake to prevent unsafe movements. Active Park Assist 2.0 allowed the Navigator to park itself in parallel and perpendicular spaces. ActiveGlide was a semi-autonomous, hands-free driving technology approved for use on over 200,000 kilometres of North American roads. It performed well within its operational limits but required driver attention.
