2022 Hyundai Tucson Reviews Summary

The redesigned 2022 Hyundai Tucson has to offer a high-tech cabin, comfortable ride, competent engine lineup, and spacious cargo area to keep up with the Joneses in the hot-selling and competitive compact SUV class. It does that, and more, with Hyundai giving plenty of compelling reasons to take the 2022 Tucson for a test drive.

2022 GMC Terrain Reviews Summary

“Terrain” is a misnomer as applied to this compact crossover SUV from GMC. The name suggests far more off-roading capability than is available from this restyled Chevy Equinox, and the new AT4 trim level, which equips the 2022 GMC Terrain with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), “sport-terrain” tires, and a steel front skid plate, ought to come with a disclaimer. Based on our testing, the new 2022 Terrain AT4 is all show and no go, as in: “No, you can’t go there in this small SUV.” Not without damaging it, anyway.

2022 Hyundai Tucson

8/10

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson was built on a new platform, offering a long-wheelbase model in North America with two rows of seating and an expanded cargo area. Its front design featured a parametric grille that cleverly concealed LED daytime running lights, Bi-LED headlights, and LED front turn signals, creating a distinctive shape reminiscent of the Aztec Spirit Bird. The side profile borrowed design cues from the Hyundai Elantra, with a silver D-pillar that gave the Tucson a unique floating roof appearance. At the rear, the Tucson sported toothy taillights illuminated by LEDs, contributing to its standout design among compact SUVs. Depending on the trim level, the Tucson rode on either 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels, with high-end models featuring premium fascias, skid plates, gloss black pillars, and a panoramic sunroof. The interior was well-appointed, with stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats as standard, and leather-trimmed seats available on higher trims. The dashboard's horizontal lines and uncluttered aesthetic added to the sense of spaciousness.

The 2022 GMC Terrain received updates to its front styling, wheel designs, taillights, and interior trim. The new AT4 trim level introduced a bolder grille design, black 17-inch alloy wheels with sport-terrain tires, and AT4 badges. The Terrain AT4 was marketed as a "small off-road SUV," equipped with a steel skid plate to protect vital components. The test vehicle featured Ebony Twilight metallic paint, a black leather interior, and a range of packages, bringing the MSRP to $44,757 in Canada. The Terrain's interior, while roomy, reflected its entry-level status in terms of material quality and execution. The optional head-up display projected information onto a clear plastic panel rather than the windshield, and the pushbutton transmission controls, though freeing up console space, were not particularly intuitive. Despite these drawbacks, the Terrain offered a comfortable ride and decent handling on pavement, with a quiet cabin and effective climate control system.

Performance

2022 Hyundai Tucson

7/10

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson offered two powertrain variants: a 2.5-litre direct-injected four-cylinder engine and a hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The ICE engine produced 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid powertrain delivered 226 total system horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, making it more powerful and enjoyable to drive. The Tucson Hybrid was also more fuel-efficient, with a combined fuel consumption rating of 6.4 L/100 km. The Tucson's AWD system performed well in off-road testing, comparable to Subaru's reactive AWD system. The upcoming plug-in hybrid version promised even more power, with an estimated 261 horsepower and 224 pound-feet of torque.

The 2022 GMC Terrain was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The engine's torque was available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm, but there was a delay off the line. The nine-speed automatic transmission helped keep the Terrain in the torque band once rolling. The Terrain's AWD system offered different modes, including Off-Road and Hill Descent Control. The Terrain AT4 had 20.1 centimetres of ground clearance, less than some competitors. The ride was smooth on highways and city streets, but the Terrain struggled off-road, with the front end scraping on uneven terrain. The sport-terrain tires offered limited grip, and the overall driving experience was dull, with numb steering and brakes. The Terrain's fuel economy was rated at 9.0 L/100 km combined with AWD.

Form and function

2022 GMC Terrain

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson offered a spacious and well-appointed interior, comparable to competitors like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. It featured a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat as standard, with an eight-way version available on higher trims. Heated front seats were standard, with ventilated front seats and heated rear seats available. The Tucson's new platform provided more passenger and cargo space, with 1,095 litres of cargo space and a 60-40 split-folding rear bench seat. The cabin comfortably accommodated a family of four, with more passenger volume than the CR-V, RAV4, and Escape.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered a roomy interior with numerous comfort-enhancing features and storage solutions. The AT4 trim included power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The perforated leather upholstery with caramel-colour contrast stitching added an upscale touch. The back seat provided ample legroom and support, with a rear USB charging port. The Terrain's cargo space measured 838 litres behind the second row, expanding to 1,792 litres with the rear seat folded. A large storage bin was located under the trunk floor, and the front passenger seat could be folded down for longer items.

2022 GMC Terrain

8/10

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson came equipped with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, HD Radio, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. Higher trims offered a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation and a fully digital instrument cluster. The touchpoints on the centre console were responsive, but the lack of physical buttons made it challenging to use while driving. Steering wheel controls and voice commands were more heavily relied upon.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered two infotainment systems, with a 7-inch touchscreen standard on SLE trim and an 8-inch touchscreen on higher trims. Both systems included Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and GMC Connected Services. The larger screen offered connected navigation and a Bose premium sound system. The voice recognition system was highly effective, accurately responding to various prompts. The Tech Package added a head-up display, park assist sensors, and a surround-view camera system. The Tire Fill Alert system and remote engine starting were also notable features.

The Tucson had not been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA at the time of review.

The 2022 GMC Terrain came standard with the GMC Pro Safety Package, which included forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. The GMC Pro Safety Plus Package added adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. The Terrain received mostly "Good" crash-test scores from the IIHS, with a "Marginal" rating in a new side-impact test. The NHTSA had not evaluated the Terrain's crashworthiness at the time of review.
