2022 GMC Terrain Reviews Summary

“Terrain” is a misnomer as applied to this compact crossover SUV from GMC. The name suggests far more off-roading capability than is available from this restyled Chevy Equinox, and the new AT4 trim level, which equips the 2022 GMC Terrain with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), “sport-terrain” tires, and a steel front skid plate, ought to come with a disclaimer. Based on our testing, the new 2022 Terrain AT4 is all show and no go, as in: “No, you can’t go there in this small SUV.” Not without damaging it, anyway.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain underwent a series of updates, including refreshed front styling, new wheel designs, and revised taillights and interior trim. The introduction of the AT4 trim level added a bolder grille design, black 17-inch alloy wheels with sport-terrain tires, and AT4 badges. A steel skid plate was also added to protect vital components, catering to its "small off-road SUV" claim. The test vehicle featured Ebony Twilight metallic paint, a black leather interior, and was equipped with several packages, bringing its MSRP in Canada to $44,757. Despite the upgrades, the Terrain's interior materials and execution did not fully meet expectations for its price range, with some design choices, like the pushbutton transmission controls, being less intuitive.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received subtle exterior updates that were not immediately noticeable. The GLE 450e test vehicle, finished in Twilight Blue metallic with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, exuded a sophisticated presence. The interior, featuring Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery with natural grain brown walnut trim, was luxurious and offered a range of customization options. The GLE's cabin was one of the highest quality in its segment, providing a robust and elegant environment for occupants.

Performance

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. While the engine's power delivery required some adaptation, the nine-speed automatic transmission helped maintain the vehicle within its torque band. The Terrain's towing capacity was limited to 680 kilograms, a reduction from the previous 2.0-litre engine's capability. The AT4 model offered FWD and AWD modes, with additional Off-Road and Hill Descent Control systems. However, the Terrain's off-road performance was limited by its ground clearance and tire grip. Fuel economy was rated at 9.6 L/100 km city, 8.3 highway, and 9.0 combined with AWD.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the GLE 450e's turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The GLE 450e accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. Its fuel economy was estimated at 4.1 L-e/100 km, with a hybrid mode rating of 10.5 city/9.1 highway/9.9 combined. The GLE 450e's electric mode allowed for highway speeds up to 140 km/h. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough surfaces. The GLE's steering was precise, making it easy to maneuver despite its size.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered two infotainment systems, with the SLT, AT4, and Denali trims featuring an 8-inch touchscreen. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and OnStar services. The Infotainment Package II added connected navigation and a Bose audio system. The voice recognition system was highly effective, though the Bose speakers were less impressive. The Tech Package included a head-up display, park assist sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. The steering wheel's touch-sensitive controls required careful handling to avoid accidental volume changes.

The 2022 GMC Terrain came standard with the GMC Pro Safety Package, including forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and more. The Pro Safety Plus Package added adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and other features. The Terrain received mostly "Good" crash-test scores from the IIHS, with a "Marginal" rating in a new side-impact test. The NHTSA had not evaluated the 2022 Terrain at the time of review.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE included standard safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included active lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and evasive steering assist. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS for the 2022 model year, though crash tests for the 2024 model were not yet completed.
