2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The “S” in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS name is meant to connect the SUV to the S-Class flagship sedan. In this sense, the GLS is the S-Class of SUVs, and it delivers on that positioning. The 2021 GLS-Class has three rows of spacious seating, and puts comfort above all else. The GLS can hold groceries, weekend bags, antique desks purchased from a roadside consignment shop—all things that would require a lot of negotiating in the S-Class sedan.

The GLS is one member of a growing fraternity of full-size, three-row, luxury SUVs. Their ranks include the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, and the more recent BMW X7. The GLS sets itself apart with a higher standard of luxury, and impressive performance… if you’re willing to shell out the cash.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

If it’s true that styling is what ultimately sells a person on a new vehicle, then the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is poised for success. Volkswagen doesn’t fiddle with the Cross Sport formula for the 2022 model year, aside from adding standard digital instrumentation and bolting bigger 21-inch wheels to the top-of-the-line Execline, the US equivalent of which is shown in the accompanying photos. Those wheels, a Pure Grey paint job, and red leather seat inserts made our test vehicle look terrific.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

8/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, a continuation of the third generation introduced in 2020, was a luxurious SUV that offered a more refined and svelte appearance compared to its predecessors. Despite its large size, the GLS managed to present a softer, more streamlined look, with a futuristic cabin dominated by a massive digital screen that spanned nearly two-thirds of the dashboard. This tech-heavy interior was complemented by a range of standard features, including remote keyless entry, nine USB ports, and a 13-speaker Burmester premium sound system. The GLS was available in three trims: GLS 450, GLS 580, and the high-performance AMG GLS 63, each offering varying levels of luxury and power.

In contrast, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was designed by removing the third row from the standard Atlas, resulting in a more coupe-like appearance with a lower roofline and shorter length. This design choice gave the Cross Sport a bold and sporty look, especially in the Execline trim with its 21-inch machined-finish wheels. Inside, the Atlas Cross Sport offered a spacious interior for five passengers, with generous rear legroom and a range of comfort features such as heated and ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. However, the interior was marred by the use of hard, glossy plastics, which detracted from the overall impression of quality.

Performance

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

6/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a range of powerful engine options. The entry-level GLS 450 was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 580 featured a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, delivering 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The AMG GLS 63, with its hand-crafted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, boasted an impressive 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. All engines were paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The AMG GLS 63 could accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 280 km/h. The GLS also featured an adaptive air suspension system, providing a smooth ride and precise handling.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered two engine options: a standard turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and an available 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 276 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The V6 engine provided a more satisfying driving experience, with a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms. However, the Cross Sport’s suspension tuning was criticized for being too firm at low speeds and too soft at higher speeds, resulting in a less refined ride quality.

Form and function

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

8/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered three rows of spacious seating, with ample headroom and legroom for first- and second-row occupants. The third row was also suitable for full-size adults, a rarity among three-row SUVs. The GLS provided 355 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 1,209 litres with the third row folded, and a total of 2,400 litres with both the second and third rows folded. The interior featured numerous storage compartments, including spacious in-door bins and a centre console with butterfly doors.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, sharing its wheelbase and track width with the larger seven-passenger model, offered a roomy interior for five adults. The test vehicle featured 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The cargo area provided ample space, with deep wells for additional storage. However, the lack of lining in storage compartments led to potential rattling and scraping noises during driving.

Technology

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS came equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, featuring a massive touch screen and a trackpad for navigation. The system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, though a USB-C cable was required. The MBUX voice-control system allowed for complex commands, enhancing the user experience. The digital dash extended to the fully digital instrument panel, controlled by touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport featured the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, a digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch screen, paired with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 12-speaker Fender premium audio system in the Execline trim. However, the user experience was often frustrating, with issues related to touchscreen interaction and voice recognition technology.

Safety

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS came standard with a range of driver-assistance features, including Active Brake Assist, automatic high beams, and crosswind assist. Available safety tech included lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. The GLS also featured a full array of airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a semi-autonomous Park Assist system. The Atlas Cross Sport received favourable crash-test ratings, though not the highest accolades from safety organizations.
