2021 Mazda MAZDA3 Reviews Summary

Mazdas are fun. All of them. Even the SUVs. But until recently, they weren’t particularly fast. The joy in driving a Mazda derived from the expertly tuned ride and handling qualities that made piloting the automaker’s products a sheer delight. And then Mazda started turbocharging cars and SUVs equipped with its 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine. Now, the 2021 Mazda3 2.5 Turbo arrives, one of the last members of Mazda’s fleet to add forced induction for boosted power and performance. The result, as you might guess, is absolutely delightful.

2022 Subaru WRX Reviews Summary

The model year 2022 WRX delivers a cocktail of performance and all-weather practicality that remains unmatched at its price point. Although the introduction of Subaru’s 2.4-litre engine doesn’t result in a massive power bump for the WRX, the car still impresses—particularly in the handling department.

Look and feel

2021 Mazda MAZDA3

10/10

2022 Subaru WRX

8/10

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3, following its 2019 redesign, continued to impress with its award-winning design. Its bodywork was a blend of drama and sophistication, offering a daring yet refined appearance. The sedan version was more conservative, while the hatchback, known as the Mazda3 Sport, had a more aggressive stance. The 2.5 Turbo model, available in both body styles, featured all-wheel drive and a premium interior with options like white leather, which added to its luxury appeal. Despite some use of hard plastics, the interior design was driver-focused, with a seamless integration of the Mazda Connect infotainment system.

In contrast, the 2022 Subaru WRX offered a more subtle design, with a wider body and a signature hood scoop. The front fascia was understated, while the side profile featured black plastic cladding with functional air outlets for improved aerodynamics. The rear design included flared fenders and quad tailpipes, giving it a streamlined look. Inside, the WRX saw significant improvements in fit and finish, with sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The interior was more modern, with better materials and a focus on comfort, making it a practical choice for daily commuting.

Performance

2021 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

2022 Subaru WRX

6/10

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 2.5 Turbo was powered by a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 250 horsepower with 93-octane fuel and 227 horsepower with 87-octane. It featured a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport and Manual modes, paired with an advanced i-Activ AWD system. The turbocharged powertrain added minimal weight but significantly boosted performance, offering a smooth and predictable driving experience. The car's dynamic tuning and improved steering feel made it a joy to drive, with a focus on delivering maximum driving pleasure.

The 2022 Subaru WRX, on the other hand, was equipped with a 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine, producing 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It came with a standard AWD system and offered a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT. The manual transmission was precise and satisfying, while the CVT provided faster shift times. The WRX's suspension, mounted on the Subaru Global Platform, offered a forgiving ride quality, making it suitable for various road conditions. However, the power improvement was minimal, and the car felt slightly sluggish compared to some competitors.

2022 Subaru WRX

7/10

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 2.5 Turbo featured a luxurious interior with leather upholstery and heated front seats. However, it lacked some premium features like ventilated seats and rear-seat amenities. The trunk offered 374 litres of space, while the hatchback version provided more utility with 569 litres behind the rear seats. The cabin was driver-focused, with adequate storage for personal items.

The 2022 Subaru WRX, despite not offering a hatchback option, increased its cargo capacity to 354 litres, with a 60/40 split-fold function for the rear seats. The sport seats were comfortable and supportive, available in various upholstery options. The WRX's standard AWD and practical interior made it a viable choice for daily commuting, offering a balance of performance and practicality.

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. However, the lack of a touchscreen and poor voice-recognition technology were drawbacks. The system was paired with a 12-speaker Bose audio system, offering good sound quality. The Premium Package included a head-up display, enhancing the driving experience.

The 2022 Subaru WRX offered an 11.6-inch touchscreen display in Sport trims, with physical controls for essential functions. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration had some quirks, the system was visually impressive. The base trim featured a dual 7-inch display setup. An 11-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system was available, providing excellent audio quality.

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 boasted a comprehensive suite of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), designed to support the driver. It included adaptive cruise control, an Adaptive Front Lighting System, and Traffic Jam Assist. The car received top safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS, making it a safe choice for consumers.

The 2022 Subaru WRX offered the EyeSight suite of ADAS on CVT models, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. However, manual transmission models did not have EyeSight due to technical limitations. The WRX featured blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on higher trims. The Subaru Global Platform improved crash safety, and the car came with seven airbags as standard.
