2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Reviews Summary

The full-size SUV segment is a relatively small one, and Chevrolet dominates it. The Tahoe, and its extended-length twin, the Suburban, account for about half of all big SUV sales despite competitive shortcomings in terms of interior comfort, cargo space, and towing capability. With the all-new 2021 Chevy Tahoe (and Suburban), two of those three flaws are resolved. At the same time, the 2021 Tahoe gets a big upgrade in terms of driving dynamics, technology, and innovation.

2022 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia shares its platform with the Toyota Tundra pickup truck. It comes with standard four-wheel-drive (4WD) drivetrains (rear-wheel-drive (RWD) is not offered in Canada). The Sequoia comes in three trim levels: Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro. While competitors have refreshed their full-size SUVs over the past few years, Toyota has stood pat with the Sequoia, relying on minor cosmetic updates to keep the SUV in the hunt since 2008. A new Toyota Sequoia has been announced and is slated to be launched for the 2023 model year.

Look and feel

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

7/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe offered a diverse range of trims, each with distinct styling elements that set them apart. The base LS and popular LT trims featured different grille patterns, while the sporty RST trim boasted a slotted grille, a blacked-out appearance, and 22-inch wheels. The rugged Z71 trim combined the LS grille with a blacked-out look, a redesigned front end for off-roading, red tow hooks, a skid plate, and unique 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. The upscale Premier trim adopted the RST’s slotted grille with chrome accents and polished wheels, while the luxurious High Country trim showcased a chrome bar grille and bright-finished 22-inch wheels. The Tahoe's design was dominated by its grille, with standard LED headlights and expressive taillights enhancing its look. Despite its familiar design themes, the new Tahoe appeared more slab-sided, with larger wheels improving its overall appearance.

The Tahoe's pricing ranged from $57,048 for the LS with rear-wheel drive to $81,448 for the High Country with 4-wheel drive. The Z71 trim we tested, priced at $59,200, included several option packages, bringing the total to $80,293. Inside, the Tahoe featured a 10.2-inch infotainment screen and new electronic transmission controls, though the control layout was somewhat compromised. The interior quality met expectations, with exposed stitching and soft-touch surfaces in the upper cabin, while the lower half was covered in hard plastic. The Tahoe offered a maximum seating capacity of eight, with leather seats standard from the LT trim onwards. The Z71 trim we tested provided a comfortable and well-equipped interior, though the control layout could have been more user-friendly.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia continued its second generation into its 14th year, maintaining a mature design with modestly sized grilles and elegant wheel arches. Despite its age, the Sequoia's exterior design remained tasteful, with straight lines and a substantial presence. It measured 1,956 mm in height, 2,030 mm in width, and 5,210 mm in length, with a 3,099 mm wheelbase and 32 cm of ground clearance. Inside, the Sequoia's design appeared dated, with a 7-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch TFT driver information screen. However, the interior was well-constructed, with high-quality materials and tight seams, ensuring durability and comfort for families.

Our test vehicle, a US-spec Nightshade Special Edition model, demonstrated Toyota's efforts to keep the Sequoia relevant. Based on the Limited model, it offered a comfortable and spacious interior with three rows of seating. The Sequoia's interior was typical of Toyota, with high-quality materials and a focus on durability. Despite its dated design, the Sequoia remained a practical choice for families, offering ample space and comfort.

Performance

2022 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe offered three engine options, with a standard 5.3-litre V8 engine delivering 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The High Country trim featured an exclusive 6.2-litre V8 engine producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. A turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel inline six-cylinder engine was also available, offering 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, except for the Z71 trim. The Tahoe's 10-speed automatic transmission powered the rear wheels, with a 4WD system optional on base trims and standard on others. The Z71 trim included a two-speed transfer case, hill descent control, and all-terrain tires. The Tahoe could tow up to 3,810 kg and handle a payload of 831 kg. The independent rear suspension, adaptive damping, and air suspension upgrades significantly improved ride quality, making the Tahoe Z71 smooth on various terrains. The 5.3-litre V8 engine and 10-speed transmission provided ample power and refinement, with Dynamic Fuel Management technology enhancing fuel efficiency.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia featured a single powertrain option: a 5.7-litre i-Force V8 engine with 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the Sequoia offered a lockable Torsen limited-slip centre differential and a two-speed transfer case in 4WD models. The Sequoia's truck roots contributed to its 608 kg payload capacity and 3,221 kg towing capacity. Despite its weight, the Sequoia delivered a smooth and stable ride, with a four-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension providing excellent control. The TRD Pro off-road model featured Fox shocks for enhanced off-road capabilities. The Sequoia's fuel consumption ratings were 18.5 L/100 km in the city, 13.9 on the highway, and 16.4 combined. The Sequoia's robust construction and ample ground clearance made it a competent off-roader, while its 12.5-metre turning circle and excellent sightlines made it a practical daily driver.

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe's new independent rear suspension improved passenger comfort and cargo space. The test vehicle featured heated power-adjustable front seats and a heated steering wheel, with ventilated seats available on higher trims. The power sliding storage console offered additional storage options, while the second row provided a choice between a bench seat or captain’s chairs. The third-row seat was more spacious, accommodating adults comfortably. The Tahoe offered 722 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat, expanding to 2,056 litres with the seat folded down, and a maximum volume of 3,480 litres.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia prioritized passenger comfort, with spacious seating in all three rows. Three-zone climate control catered to all passengers, and a standard power moonroof added to the interior's appeal. Heated front seats were standard, with heated rear seats available on the Platinum grade. The Sequoia's cargo compartment offered 535 litres of space behind the third row, expanding to 1,886 litres with the third row folded, and a maximum of 3,401 litres with both rows folded. The Sequoia's interior featured ample storage options, including a centre console, glove compartment, and door pockets.

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe featured a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system offered over-the-air updates, enhanced cybersecurity, and Chevrolet Connected Services. The voice-recognition system was impressive, though the climate system was not voice-activated. The test vehicle included a wireless charging pad and a mid-grade Bose audio system. The Rear Seat Media system offered versatility, though the test vehicle lacked the available 15-inch head-up display.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia's infotainment system appeared outdated, with a 7-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch TFT driver information screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility were standard, along with Bluetooth connectivity. The Sequoia Platinum and TRD Pro added navigation and a JBL premium audio system. The Sequoia's technology lagged behind competitors, lacking modern powertrain options and electrification features. However, all exterior lighting was LED, and a rear backup camera and parking sonar were standard.
