2020 Subaru Outback Reviews Summary

Subaru kept the wagon vibes rolling while the rest of the world fell in love with SUVs and crossovers. And, although the 2020 Outback is technically a midsize crossover, one look will have you remembering summer drives in an overstuffed station wagon down a busy highway, whether you actually took those trips or not. And that’s not a bad thing. The Outback has always provided utility, performance, and looks, and those things have made it Subaru’s top-selling model. With the updates for this sixth generation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see people falling in love with the station wagon again.

2021 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

Toyota’s minivan got a major makeover for 2021, now entering its fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For the first time, the Sienna gets a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, and not only that—it’s standard equipment. The Sienna Hybrid is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.

2020 Subaru Outback

8/10

2021 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2020 Subaru Outback retained its winning formula by focusing on incremental improvements rather than a complete overhaul. Built on Subaru’s Global Platform, the Outback boasted a 70% increase in structural rigidity, enhancing its safety and performance. The base 2.5-litre engine, although appearing similar to its predecessor, was redesigned with 90% new parts, offering 182 horsepower. For those seeking more power, the 2.4-litre turbocharged engine from the Ascent was available in higher trims. Externally, changes were subtle, with noticeable updates to the head- and taillights. Inside, the Outback introduced an 11.6-inch touchscreen on all but the base trim, alongside innovative tech like DriverFocus, which used facial recognition to enhance driver safety.

In contrast, the 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid aimed to redefine minivan aesthetics with SUV-like styling. Its wide grille and sleek LED headlamp arrays contributed to a more assertive stance, while the redesigned sliding side doors added a sculpted look. The Sienna’s interior emphasized width and comfort, with a higher seating position and a simple, uncluttered dashboard. The centre console featured practical storage solutions, and the second and third-row seats offered ample space and comfort. The Sienna’s fit and finish were of high quality, reflecting Toyota’s commitment to excellence.

The 2020 Subaru Outback offered two engine options: a 2.5-litre engine with 182 horsepower and a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which Subaru tuned to mimic a traditional automatic transmission, minimizing the typical CVT drawbacks. The Outback’s symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system provided consistent power delivery and enhanced safety, especially in adverse conditions. With 22.1 cm of ground clearance, the Outback was capable off-road, though not designed for extreme terrains.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid combined a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, delivering 243 horsepower. Available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, the Sienna used an electronically controlled CVT. While the CVT sometimes dulled throttle response, the Sienna’s four selectable drive modes offered some flexibility. The Sienna’s handling was improved with new suspension systems, providing a comfortable and stable ride. Its fuel efficiency was impressive, with FWD models rated at 6.6 L/100 km in the city and 6.5 on the highway, while AWD models achieved 6.8 city and 6.6 highway.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2020 Subaru Outback excelled in functionality, offering 920 litres of cargo space, expandable to 2,144 litres with the rear seats folded. Its design allowed for ample passenger space, with excellent headroom and legroom, even for taller individuals. The Outback’s low centre of gravity improved handling and braking, while its visibility was generally good, despite some blind spots.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna prioritized convenience and versatility, with a standard third-row seat and a second row that slid up to 63.5 cm for easy access. The Sienna’s cargo capacity was impressive, accommodating a full four-by-eight sheet of plywood. It offered 949 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expandable to 2,860 litres with the second and third rows adjusted. The Sienna’s hybrid battery was cleverly integrated, preserving cargo space, and its power-operated doors and liftgate added to its family-friendly appeal.

Technology

The 2020 Subaru Outback featured an 11.6-inch touchscreen, offering a visually appealing interface. However, the system suffered from lag, affecting navigation and other functions. The camera resolution was also lacking, detracting from the overall experience.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna boasted a nine-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It offered a range of connectivity options, including Bluetooth and multiple USB ports. Higher trims featured advanced audio systems and a rear-seat entertainment system. The driver benefited from a multi-information display and a digital rearview mirror, enhancing convenience and safety.

Safety

7/10

The 2020 Subaru Outback included a comprehensive safety suite, with standard AWD and features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. However, the DriverFocus system was problematic, frequently issuing unnecessary alerts.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna came equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, offering a robust set of safety features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-departure alert. It also featured the Star Safety System and blind spot monitoring. The Sienna received high safety ratings, including a “Top Safety Pick+” from the IIHS and a Five-Star Overall Rating from NHTSA.
