2020 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Equipped with three rows of legitimately comfortable seating for as many as eight passengers, able to hold as much as 2,962 litres of cargo, capable of towing up more than 4,000 kilograms (9,000 pounds) of trailer, and supplying a minimum of 24.6 centimetres of ground clearance, I can’t think of a better all-around SUV than the 2020 Ford Expedition. But all of this capability doesn’t come cheap. Prices start at $62,500 for an Expedition XLT, and an Expedition King Ranch like our test vehicle tallies up to $80,750, not including a $1,950 destination charge.

2021 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Full-size SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator represent the smallest slice of the luxury SUV market. They're the heaviest, hugest, and fanciest people movers sold by mainstream automakers—and you can count them all on two hands. The Navigator, a popular nameplate since 1998, was redesigned in dramatic fashion for 2018. In its fourth model year, this Navigator still delights us as we test newer competitors costing at or above its $97,000 starting price. Foreign nameplates offer no equal to the Navigator, and it's not for sheer size or a desire to lift up Lincoln that we say this is one of the best American vehicles, among both trucks and cars, ever made.

2020 Ford Expedition

8/10

2021 Lincoln Navigator

9/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition, last redesigned in 2018, presented a clean and somewhat understated full-size SUV design. While some might have found its styling a bit dull, this simplicity often aged well, making it a practical choice for those planning to keep their vehicle for many years. The King Ranch edition stood out with its 22-inch aluminum wheels, mesh grille insert, LED headlights, and unique grey-painted lower exterior trim. The Star White metallic paint added a touch of elegance, although the taillight shape and the body-coloured C-pillar were points of contention for some. Inside, the King Ranch featured Del Rio leather in Mesa over Ebony, adorned with King Ranch cattle-brand logos, which sparked mixed reactions from passengers. Despite the luxurious touches, the presence of hard plastic, especially in lower trims, was a drawback, particularly given the SUV's price point.

In contrast, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator exuded elegance and sophistication, setting itself apart from its Ford Expedition roots. While sharing some structural elements with the Expedition, the Navigator's design was distinct, with rectilinear shapes defining its grille, windows, and lighting elements. The Pristine White model with a monochromatic package and illuminated Lincoln logo was particularly striking. Inside, the Navigator impressed with its seven colour palettes and attention to detail, such as the layered wood trim and floating centre console. The Perfect Position seats, adjustable in 30 different ways, offered unparalleled comfort. While the Navigator's materials and craftsmanship were commendable, it faced stiff competition from the more sumptuous Land Rover Range Rover, albeit at a higher price point.

Performance

2020 Ford Expedition

9/10

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 375 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 470 pound-feet of torque at 2,250 rpm. This engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, provided ample power and a pleasant exhaust note. The Expedition's standard four-wheel-drive system in Canada, along with its impressive towing capacity of up to 4,173 kilograms, made it a versatile choice. Despite its size, the Expedition handled urban environments well, thanks to its tight turning radius and adaptive damping suspension. However, the ride could be busy on imperfect roads, partly due to the large 22-inch wheels. Fuel consumption was rated at 14.1 L/100 km in the city and 10.6 on the highway.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator featured a more powerful twin-turbo V6 engine, producing 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This engine, borrowed from the Ford Raptor, provided the Navigator with impressive acceleration and a satisfying sound. The 10-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD system ensured smooth power delivery. With a towing capacity of 3,765 kilograms, the Navigator was a capable hauler. However, its fuel efficiency was less impressive, with a combined rating of 13.8 L/100 km. While the Navigator's adaptive dampers offered a comfortable ride, it lacked the refinement of competitors like the Cadillac Escalade. The steering and brakes were less precise, but the Navigator's overall refinement and power made it a compelling choice for highway driving.

Form and function

2020 Ford Expedition

10/10

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition excelled in its ability to tow, carry cargo, and transport passengers. The King Ranch's power running boards made entry easy, and the interior offered comfortable seating for all passengers, with heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The second-row captain's chairs provided first-class accommodations, and the third-row seat was genuinely comfortable for adults, thanks to the independent rear suspension. Cargo space was generous, with 546 litres behind the third row and up to 2,962 litres with the seats folded down.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator offered a spacious interior, accommodating up to seven passengers comfortably. The boxy design maximized cargo space, with 546 litres behind the third row and up to 2,925 litres in total. The Navigator Reserve featured heated second-row seats and a three-zone climate system, although some competitors offered more advanced features. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable, with numerous adjustments and massage functions. Visibility was excellent, but parking could be challenging due to the vehicle's size.

Technology

2020 Ford Expedition

8/10

2021 Lincoln Navigator

7/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition featured an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Sync 3, which, while functional, felt outdated compared to newer systems. It offered Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, along with FordPass Connect and a premium sound system from Bang & Olufsen. The Pro Trailer Backup Assist was a standout feature for those who frequently towed trailers.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator's 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while intuitive, felt dated compared to competitors. It lacked wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the 20-speaker Revel Ultima audio system was good but not exceptional. However, the Navigator offered wireless device charging, smartphone ignition key functionality, and a rear entertainment system with Roku media streaming. The drive mode animations added a touch of elegance to the experience.

Safety

2020 Ford Expedition

10/10

2021 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition boasted a strong safety record, with a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It came equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360, which included features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The adaptive cruise control was optional, and the ADAS systems were generally smooth and effective.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator also received a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with standard safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional inflatable rear seat belts added an extra layer of safety for rear passengers. However, the Navigator's adaptive cruise control was less advanced than some competitors.
