2020 Ford Edge Reviews Summary

The Ford Edge isn’t exactly memorable, which isn’t a bad thing. It isn’t a good thing either. Cars can be remembered for attractive design, fun driving dynamics, or being a solid value. They can also be remembered in a negative light for a polarizing design, poor build quality, or being unsafe to the point of scandal. But the 2020 Ford Edge is just... there. It is a midsize two-row SUV that doesn’t offend, but also doesn’t “wow.” But just as critically, the Edge is getting long in the tooth. In the SUV segment, constant iteration is necessary for survival, and the Edge is in need of a redesign.

But in lieu of new blood, Ford has done well to keep the Edge fitted with the latest infotainment and safety technology. It also offers a performance variant, called the Edge ST. This is something that you won’t find in the Edge’s competitors, the Nissan Murano and Honda Passport. But is it enough to keep the Edge relevant against its more contemporary rivals? Read on to find out.

2020 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Equipped with three rows of legitimately comfortable seating for as many as eight passengers, able to hold as much as 2,962 litres of cargo, capable of towing up more than 4,000 kilograms (9,000 pounds) of trailer, and supplying a minimum of 24.6 centimetres of ground clearance, I can’t think of a better all-around SUV than the 2020 Ford Expedition. But all of this capability doesn’t come cheap. Prices start at $62,500 for an Expedition XLT, and an Expedition King Ranch like our test vehicle tallies up to $80,750, not including a $1,950 destination charge.

2020 Ford Edge

7/10

2020 Ford Expedition

8/10

The 2020 Ford Edge, a crossover SUV, was based on the same platform as the Ford Fusion sedan, offering a car-like ride and ample cabin space. Despite a styling update in 2019, the Edge's design was considered slightly outdated compared to its competitors, who typically undergo redesigns every six years. The Edge's exterior featured angular headlights and a large trapezoidal grille, reminiscent of the Fusion. Inside, the cabin showed signs of aging, with a layout unchanged since 2015, though it included contemporary elements like a rotary shifter. The interior quality was decent, with soft-touch materials, but was marred by the extensive use of hard plastics.

The 2020 Ford Expedition, last redesigned in 2018, was a full-size SUV known for its clean, albeit somewhat boring, styling. This design approach was expected to age well, appealing to those planning to keep the vehicle for many years. The King Ranch variant stood out with 22-inch aluminum wheels, a mesh grille insert, and LED headlights. Inside, the Expedition King Ranch featured Del Rio leather and numerous King Ranch logos, though the presence of hard plastics was noted, especially in lower trims. Despite this, the Expedition's cabin was spacious and comfortable, with heated and ventilated front seats and ample storage options.

Performance

2020 Ford Edge

2020 Ford Expedition

9/10

The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, offered solid low-end acceleration, making it suitable for city driving. The Edge ST variant featured a 2.7-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, providing a more engaging driving experience with its sportier handling and performance-oriented features.

In contrast, the 2020 Ford Expedition was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, generating 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This engine, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, provided ample power and smooth acceleration. The Expedition's 4WD system and adaptive damping suspension contributed to its agreeable driving dynamics, although the steering was noted to be slow. The Expedition's independent rear suspension improved ride quality and interior space, making it a competitive choice among full-size SUVs.

Form and function

2020 Ford Expedition

10/10

The 2020 Ford Edge offered a spacious cabin with a commanding view of the road. The interior featured numerous storage compartments, and the second-row seats provided ample head- and legroom. The Edge's cargo space was generous, with 1,110 litres available behind the rear seats, expanding to 2,078 litres with the seats folded down. The SEL and Titanium trims included a hands-free foot-activated power rear liftgate.

The 2020 Ford Expedition excelled in towing, cargo capacity, and passenger comfort. The King Ranch variant featured power running boards for easy access, and the interior offered heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and extensive storage options. The Expedition's third-row seat was notably comfortable for adults, thanks to the independent rear suspension. Cargo space in the standard-length Expedition was 546 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,962 litres with the second row folded down. The Expedition MAX variant offered even more cargo space.

Technology

2020 Ford Edge

9/10

2020 Ford Expedition

8/10

The 2020 Ford Edge was equipped with Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The system was user-friendly, with a straightforward interface and standard smart-charging USB ports. The SEL and ST trims offered a semi-digital instrument panel, standard on the Titanium trim.

The 2020 Ford Expedition, while featuring the same SYNC 3 system, was noted for its smaller 8-inch touchscreen, which felt inadequate for a vehicle of its size and price. The system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, along with FordPass Connect and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. Additional features included a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, a rear-seat entertainment system, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, enhancing the Expedition's towing capabilities.

The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including front and side-impact airbags, AdvanceTrac traction control, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 system. This included automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The Edge received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

The 2020 Ford Expedition also featured the Ford Co-Pilot360 system, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance. Adaptive cruise control was optional. The Expedition received five-star ratings in NHTSA crash tests, with a four-star rollover resistance rating. The ADAS technology was praised for its smooth and accurate operation, contributing to the Expedition's overall safety.
