1988 Ford Escort Reviews, Pricing & Specs

Oh i loved this car, my 1988 ford escort XR3i converible, acceleration was fairly good, braking was pretty poor, handling wasn't that good till i lowered it 110mm, then it was fantastic,. the build quality was probably fantastic after it left the factory but by the time it came to me almost 20 years later it was all a bit tired, 19 gearboxes and a new exhaust centre pipe weekly over the course of 7 months. the appearance was very goody, it was a visually appealing car, if not a bit hairdresser, the cost of ownership was immense, cost me an absolute fortune to keep on the road from the £3400 yearly insurance bill to the constant mechanical failure, by the end of ownership the car owed me in excess of £15000.Oct 18, 2009

well it was my first car i bought it for a meer 300 never spent a dime on it mechanically it smoked like a chiminey and only spent money on it to make it look better rims paint spoiler and stuff like that i ended up hitting a curb during winter months and then drove it until the rotors were paper thin i think of the days of when i did not know what it meant to replace rotors or do alighnments when there was a shimmy or a shake or even lack of braking power although it is a standard it was not that hard to stop Oct 04, 2009

While it accelerates slow after second gear, it's pretty reasonable for it's small engine, the few repairs I've had to do with it are usually inexpensive, $400 at most for the transmission, I really love the look of the 80's box cars, so of course I'd like this one, and the gas mileage is a dream, I get clean over 50, and on hilly roads I can almost push 60 with neutral gear, it was a really good buy for $600.Jan 18, 2009

The car I had senior year of high school was a 1988 Ford Escort Pony I got for free. It was rusted, had chalky paint, had the nastiest interior ever, and burned oil like crazy. I still love this car more than any I've ever had. It was cheap to own and run because it required no maintenance at all. It handled like a go cart, but was slow enough to keep my from speeding. Did I mention this is still my favorite car out of everyone I've owned?Mar 30, 2008

My car is a 1988 1/2 Escort Gt. I only wish it was the cosworth though.. intreior on these cars is actually pretty high tech for late 80's its got numerous sensors with cool indicator lights and visuals.. motor choice would have to be the 1.9 H.O. .. the 1.9 sohc is just not as powerful... parts are reasonably cheap however mine developed a wierd electrical problem that i cant fiqure out.. Also an intresting fact.. if your looking to fix one up, make it a sleeper, and need a nice set of rims for it but are having a hard time fiquring out which one's will work... ask for rims for a Ford Focus.. they have the same bolt styling.. Would be a good buy for a first car or a nice little european project race/rally car.Dec 09, 2007
