This car gets you from A to B nothing special or fancy. It does the job.Does pretty good on gas,Has decent amount of foot room,nice size trunk.It just isnt very fast takes forever just to leave the lightAug 19, 2014

did not spend a dime on it other than normal tires,breaks,oil changes. Near the end I had to have the rusted out rear shock mounts repaired by a welder but the car had seen 11 good years by then. We toted around three kids and the dog plus supplies for trips to the cottage and it served us well. When the kids were younger and our cottage was farther away we had a Marquis Wagon, then a Taurus Wagon,then we bought a cottage closer to home and the kids got older and didn't always come along but when they did - we still all fit (not quite the same as a Marquis but for it's size it was excellent.) I know they stopped making the Escort but if you are planning to buy one just check rear shock mounts (rusting was apparently common)May 21, 2014

I purchased this car from an Iowa dealer after my Saturn died. Car was
definitely driven by an aggressive driver just like me. From a performance and
fun standpoint, it was quite powerful and very lightweight for a budget car. It
also did pretty well at the gas pump, averaging 30 miles per gallon. On the
downside, the car had a number of mechanical issues relating to rust and
corrosion. The passenger side door sill was rusted out (I've noticed this
particular issue on a majority of ZX2s), the shift linkages were rusting to the
point that power shifting was nearly impossilble on the 5-speed, and the rear
sway bar was literally wired to the car. I retired it after about 140,000 miles on
the odometer, but if the electrical issues could be worked out and the rust
placated for a reasonable length of time, the car was relatively sound and quite
economical for the budding corner artist.Jul 27, 2013

Although I am not a mechanic, it seems like it would be an ok car for a beginner to work on and parts are relatively cheep. I just bought this car with190,000 miles on it but the engine sounds pretty good and clutch feels good.. Its early yet but, so far, so good. Jul 08, 2013

I really like the style of the body. Fun to drive only if its a manual....of course. Its easy to work on. Handles great through turns. Plenty of trunk space for stereo systems. Lots of custom made parts to choose from.Feb 23, 2013

the ford zx2 is the probe gt's successor, its not as fast as it but handles just as well, and the 2.0 ztec is a nice little engine, the car has a very stiff front end so it has the tendency to understeer a little easier than other cars of the same class, Aug 28, 2011

Salvage car. Has lots a clattering, clanging and other noises. Intermittently has no brake lights. Ceiling fabric has come undone in the back. Mileage isn't the best. Color is green and looks like a small Taurus. But for all that it is petty and gets me to work.Apr 03, 2011

this car is very comfortable, i have never had anty issues with it, best car i have ever owned by far.this is a very fast car and with exellent brakes to go along with it . this is a very cheap car to keep up gas is great and if u do have problems with it parts r dirt cheap. Jan 06, 2011

Great car and very economical. Sounds nice with the exhaust and cold air intake and gives it powerr. Its fully loaded with sunroof, power doors, power locks, and its very reliable. It has 131k on it is still runs strong and looks like neww.Jul 18, 2010

Build quality - some fenders got a little problem with lasting without repairs :)
Performance - it's fine.
Cost of Ownership - most cost is gasoline ;p

Performs well I bought this with 160,000+ miles on it. Mine is the 5 Speed Hot
Version. I have replaced the air filter with a K&N Filtercharger. I have noticed a
great improvement in acceleration. Overall a great car I like the moonroof feature

Can take you without problems, to work or to some nice place around the See or Mountain with your family!

The car runs like its brand new. There is nothing wrong with it. I purchased the car in June 2009. There hasnt been any repairs yet. There is no rust on it for a ten year old car. When purchased it had only 52K. The car drives smooth and it has been very dependable. Aug 07, 2009

Its a four banger. thats all i gotta say. its peppy, but nothing special. built pretty cheaply. its small and is easy to handle, has a distinct look. this car is cheap and good on gas. this car isn't much fun to drive, but get the job done. good first car.Aug 05, 2009

Another good commuter. Good mpg's. Blew up at 170,000 miles. A little premature I thought! Dead reliable till then. Made 2 trips to NY and many miles to and from work. A little cramped on the long trip though. I would buy another if I could find one cheap.Jul 18, 2009

it was a great car for a university student goint to class every day, not too bad on the consumption of gas, and very comfortable all around exept when you had to take many friends around, great performance, the ac was the greatest in all my vehicles so far perahaps due to the large engine on a small car!Mar 18, 2009

Not the coolest car ever....but for a student (well, soon to be), its an excellent car. Nimble, fun, cheap on gas, the usual you would expect from a compact. Only issue is that it makes a helluva lot of noise on the highway. 110 KM/H and you hear nothing but a four-banger straining to make headway. It hasn't required anything in the way of major maintenance, and starts without hesitation every time.Nov 18, 2008

It gets ya from point A to B...
Would be better if it had 4 doors that way you wouldn't have to climb in and out even in the rain and snow to let people out. A sunroof would be nice too. Subwoofers would be great as well.That's about it.Sep 10, 2008

Extremely fuel efficient. Small fun car to drive, it got me everywhere I ever needed! Didn't have the heart to trade it in when I bought my Focus, so I kept it, it is still used. Very rarely needed to go to the shop, only had one thing major happen to it. Wrecked once, took me forever to fix! It's a good car!Jul 24, 2008

It is a very reliable car. I also like that it is rated
poorly because they are cheap to buy. I have owned
3 escorts so far but am looking for a change in the
near future. No need of repairs. Performance could
use a little upgrades but Ford made it difficult to
even put a header on. Appearance is great outside
it looks very modern especially with the black
headlights smoked and the trim all painted. Cost
of ownership is around $1 a month so far and gets
35mpg going back and forth to work (very little
highway) It is not really that fun to drive

its a good all around car that gets me where i need to go, its 0-60 time is currently 7.1 seconds but with my new rousch intake and tokiko springs i hope to get in the high 6 second range, it has all the options too, plus it gets 31 mpg Jul 22, 2008

Though technically an Escort, the ZX2 was really the progenitor of the new ZX3. The 2.0 Liter DOHC I-4 Ztech was a fantastic platform to build off of for "tuners". So much so, in fact that they recycled most of it for the Focus power plant.
Coming with 130hp out of the box, it beat the Civic EX in power (127hp).
Having a better weight/power ratio than a Focus, as well as superior gear ratios, it was notable quicker and more agile than a similarly equipped Focus.
My ZX2 went through various stages of performance modifications:
Cold Air intake.
K&N Filter Charger
Diablo Superchip
Borla Exhaust
Limited Slip Differential
Removed speed limiter...
With 93 Octane, I was running about 180hp at the flywheel, 150ish at the wheels. After removing some extra weight, the power to weight ratio was pretty impressive.
All this and it got 35-40mpg if you babied it... not that I usually did.

If you're hoping to find a car that will get people to look again when you drive by, a ZX2 is the car for you. Since they were only sold in '98, '99 and '00, you don't get to see one every day. Its 2.2 L VTEC engine provides better acceleration than a regular Civic hatchback, so you won't have to worry about losing your bragging rights! This car has a sleek look to it and purrs nicely on idle. Great visibility all around, small to fit in tight parking spots and easy to customize. Gotta love it!Apr 01, 2008

After my brief encounter with a 1990 Volvo, I received my first REAL car, a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2, as a highschool graduation gift. After years of road abuse from the wear and tear of the bumpy gravel and the long road trips home ( I travel a lot by the way), I have found that this little old coupe can be a real trooper. Now that's now to say that I haven't had problems with it; infact, I just had to rebuild the transmission due to a lot of transmission defects. However, the transmissions problem mainly resulted from the high mileage trips. All in all this car makes a great starter car, very affordable and reliable. Jan 31, 2008
