What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The Sonata Hybrid sedan set to arrive in 2026 offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return fuel economy as low as an estimated 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers these trims:

• Preferred-Trend: The value-focused choice, with the base 191-horsepower 2.5-litre engine, available AWD, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluelink connected services. It suits you if you want the broadest everyday appeal and the strongest balance of equipment and price.
• N Line: The performance-oriented trim, with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, 290 hp, 311 pound-feet of torque, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, 19-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, navigation, wireless charging, digital key technology, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. It is the pick if you want the most engaging Sonata and the most equipment.

What Hyundai Sonata do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Sonata years with the most listings are 2024, 2016, and 2022.

These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they combine broader availability with familiar equipment and pricing that often lands in a practical sweet spot. When more examples are on the market, it is usually easier for you to compare condition, mileage, and features before deciding.

What is the Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

Most Sonata model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want more car for your money. The declines are especially pronounced in several newer and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples have fallen by smaller amounts. That pattern suggests there are opportunities across the lineup, but the strongest value often comes from years that have already absorbed a meaningful share of their price drop.

The 2017, 2022, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Sonata safe?

• 2025: 10/10
• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10

Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS).

For the safest used buy, the 2025 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Sonata now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −13.42% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −15.62%.

• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $28,889 CAD. The Hyundai Sonata offers a roomy cabin, a useful trunk, and a relaxed, easygoing character that suits daily driving well.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The Sonata’s base 191-horsepower, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is unremarkable, although it does offer AWD as an option for Preferred-Trend models. The Sonata Hybrid sedan set to arrive in 2026 offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return fuel economy as low as an estimated 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.
