What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The Sonata’s base 191-horsepower, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is unremarkable, although it does offer AWD as an option for Preferred-Trend models. The Sonata Hybrid sedan set to arrive in 2026 offers a similarly adequate 192-hp drivetrain, which benefits from immediate electric motor torque when accelerating from a standstill and can return fuel economy as low as an estimated 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. There is a Sonata that can raise your pulse, and it has the N Line designation. The turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produces a robust 290 hp and a healthy 311 pound-feet of torque from 1,650 rpm to 4,000 rpm. It employs a dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) to power the front wheels, but unfortunately, AWD is unavailable. Additionally, the N Line has 19-inch wheels with lower-profile tires, a sport-tuned suspension, rack-mounted instead of column-mounted electric steering, and a quad-outlet exhaust system. NRCan says a Sonata N Line should burn 8.8 L/100 km in combined driving, but we observed a fuel efficiency of 12.6 L/100 km on our testing loop.
• Infotainment: All models have a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the N Line also has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, voice recognition, and the ability to connect two smartphones to Bluetooth simultaneously. The N Line also comes with an on-board navigation system, wireless smartphone charging, digital key technology, and an 8-speaker Bose premium sound system.
• Safety package: Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). The highlights include forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additionally, the Sonata has standard lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Highway Driving Assist is standard on the Sonata N Line.

Which Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2025 Hyundai Sonata offers these trims:

• Preferred-Trend: This is the value-focused choice, with the base 191-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, AWD availability, black leather, and the core 12.3-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone integration. It suits you if you want the most accessible way into the 2025 Sonata lineup.
• N Line: This is the performance-oriented trim, adding the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine with 290 hp and 311 pound-feet of torque, a dual-clutch automatic transmission, 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a quad-outlet exhaust, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, navigation, wireless charging, digital key technology, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system. It is the best fit if you want the most powerful and feature-rich Sonata.

What Hyundai Sonata do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Sonata years with the most listings are 2024, 2016, and 2022.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more shopping choice, which can make it easier to compare condition, mileage, and equipment. They also often sit in the part of the lineup where the Sonata’s value, comfort, and feature content are especially appealing.

What is the Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

Most Sonata model years are showing double-digit price declines, which is good news if you want to buy used. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle years, while the older entries in the table are falling more slowly. That pattern gives you a broad spread of value across the lineup, especially if you are shopping for a well-equipped sedan at a lower entry price.

The 2015, 2017, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Sonata safe?

• 2025: 10/10
• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10

Every 2025 Sonata has standard advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including forward collision warning with intersection assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

For the safest used buy, the 2025 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
