Overall, the Ford Mustang consistently impresses drivers with its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and iconic styling throughout the years. Owners frequently praise the exhilarating acceleration, handling, and variety of engine options. The thrilling sound of the V8 engines adds to the driving enjoyment. However, some drivers express concerns about limited backseat space and fuel economy, as well as occasional issues with reliability and build quality in older models. Despite these drawbacks, the Mustang is often celebrated as a beloved classic that offers both excitement and nostalgia.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Ford Mustang stands out because it sits at the end of the sixth generation, a long-running redesign that brought sleeker styling, a new independent rear suspension system, and the Mustang’s first global marketing push. It kept the familiar coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, along with rear-wheel drive, which helps preserve the car’s traditional sports-car character. For shoppers, that mix of heritage and modernisation is a big part of the appeal: it still feels like a Mustang, but with enough refinement to make it more usable day to day.
This generation offered a wide spread of engines and transmissions, including Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder engine, a 3.7-litre V6, the 5.0-litre Coyote V8, and two 5.2-litre V8s reserved for the Shelby GT350 and GT500. Depending on the engine, buyers could choose from two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That breadth of choice is one of the Mustang’s biggest strengths, but it also means there is a lot of variation from one example to another. The main cautions for this model year are the reported issues with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure on EcoBoost models, plus possible transmission slippage.
For the 2023 model year specifically, the Mustang remained an appealing used buy because it was still relatively new, though that also meant prices had not yet fallen much. Owners commonly praise its performance, styling, and value, and many also like the sound system and convertible option. On the downside, some shoppers may find it light on luxury features, so the car’s strengths are more about character, driving enjoyment, and choice than outright plushness.
