Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender earns an expert rating of 7.5/10.

The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

It is built for buyers who want genuine off-road ability without giving up everyday refinement, and the lineup’s body-style and powertrain range gives you plenty of choice. The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and poor on-pavement handling.

With 38.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender is presented as rugged but refined, with a broad lineup and a four-year/80,000-kilometre warranty and roadside assistance plan that helps cover unexpected repairs during a typical lease term.

Its powertrain is described as delivering robust, smooth acceleration, and the off-road hardware is framed as confidence-inspiring and highly capable. The expert review also notes that the technology and driver aids operate in a refined manner with few reasons to complain.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is still worth weighing carefully because the model is positioned as expensive to buy and to run.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 110 is the sweet spot in the design, while the 90 looks stubby and the 130 carries more visual mass. Base versions can miss some of the upgraded materials and off-road technology found on higher trims.
• Powertrain: You can choose from turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, plus turbocharged or supercharged V8 options. The six-cylinder test vehicle delivered strong, smooth power, but fuel economy was still poor.
• Safety package: The Defender includes automatic high beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. Lane-centring assist is available when using adaptive cruise.
• Infotainment: Pivi Pro uses an 11.4-inch touchscreen and includes wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and connected services. The system also supports a configurable digital driver display.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the test vehicle should have used 13.0 L/100 km in combined driving, while observed fuel economy was 14.5 L/100 km.

Which 2025 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 90, 110, 130, and OCTA.

Here's the short version:

• 90: This is the shortest and most distinctive Defender, and it suits you if you want the most compact body style.
• 110: This is the best-value choice for most buyers because it is the design sweet spot and balances usability with the Defender’s rugged character.
• 130: Choose this if you want the most space and a more family-friendly four-door layout.
• OCTA: This is the high-performance choice, and it stands apart as the most extreme version in the lineup.

The Defender’s safety and driver-assistance features are broadly well equipped, with lane-centring assist available when using adaptive cruise control.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

The market looks moderately favourable if you are a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 150 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.22% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $83,450 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $84,090 CAD sits slightly below last year's $100,364 CAD.

That drop suggests the Defender has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face more price pressure than owners did a year ago. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower average price point than last year’s market. If you sell later, the broad appeal of the Defender may help, but its premium positioning and running costs could still weigh on resale strength.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender’s driver aids include automatic high beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

A Driver Assistance Mode menu lets you choose High, Low, or Custom assistance settings, and lane-centring assist is available with adaptive cruise control. The system is generally refined, though the lane keep assist can be overly assertive in some situations.

Should I buy a 2025 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.22% compared with last year.
• The 2025 adds the high-performance OCTA and brings strong tech and off-road capability.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $71,237 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $84,090 CAD average.
• It offers rugged-yet-refined off-road appeal with a premium image.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It brings subtle styling updates, a larger touchscreen, and new colour and accessory options.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability, technology, and current-market value, the 2025 is the primary pick. If price matters most, the 2024 is the smarter path.
