Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.17/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 4.5/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and aesthetics, and they also like the improved ride quality plus features such as heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The 4Runner’s rugged, practical character also fits buyers who want a utility vehicle with real trail credentials and plenty of cargo space.

The trade-offs are clear: it can feel loud in daily commuting, and its fuel economy is a recurring complaint. It also trails newer rivals in technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power, so it makes the most sense if you value its old-school SUV formula more than polish.

With 22.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some opportunities if you’re selective.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with strong confidence in its durability and long-term usefulness. The expert assessment also reinforces that reputation by describing it as a vehicle with a strong reputation for reliability and durability.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic dependability and more about living with an ageing platform that feels dated in daily use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The range-topping TRD Pro adds underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a beefy tubular roof rack, while the Limited also gets a surround-view camera system. The base model is more basic inside, with an old-school cabin, a small eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a generally dated feel.
• Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It has enough character for off-road use, but it feels slow on pavement and can sound strained when you ask for more.
• Safety package: Toyota’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: The system uses an eight-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It does not offer the more advanced off-road apps and gauges found in some rivals.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: TRD Pro and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Limited: This is the better fit if you want the more road-friendly, better-equipped version, especially because it adds the surround-view camera system. It suits you best if you want the 4Runner’s utility without leaning fully into the most rugged trim.
• TRD Pro: This is the choice if you want the most serious off-road attitude, with underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a tubular roof rack. It’s the trim for buyers who want the 4Runner’s toughest-looking and most adventure-focused setup.

The safety package includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning, with the surround-view camera system on TRD Pro and Limited.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 22.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 129 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.12% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $55,644 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $56,860 CAD sits slightly below last year's $63,973 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means a future seller may face more competition if the market stays loose. The 4Runner’s ageing platform and dated tech may continue to weigh on pricing unless demand for its rugged character stays strong. Its reputation for durability should still help support interest from shoppers who specifically want this kind of SUV.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings for overall and frontal crash protection, five-star ratings for side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations from NHTSA. The IIHS gives it a Good result for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes Marginal and Poor results.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.

The mixed crash-test results are the main caution here, especially the weaker small overlap frontal performance.

Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 22.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.12% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It remains a rugged, off-road-capable SUV with strong reliability and durability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $54,794 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $56,860 CAD average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $71,180 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $56,860 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned package with more capability, power, comfort, and technology.

The bottom line: If you want the current model-year 4Runner’s rugged formula and can find a well-priced example, the 2024 is the safer near-term buy. If price matters most, the 2023 is the value play; if you want a more modern 4Runner and can spend more, the 2025 is the stronger long-term direction.
