Why it stands out

The 2024 Nissan Frontier stands out as a midsize pickup that blends rugged styling with real work-truck capability. In its third generation, it was completely redesigned and grew nearly 13 centimetres in length, giving it a more substantial look than before. It also uses the same 3.8-litre V6 and nine-speed automatic transmission as before, while tow capacity rises to 3,240 kilograms. In Canada, four-wheel drive is standard, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a truck that feels ready for tougher conditions.

For 2024, the Frontier’s lineup broadened with a more refined SL trim for Crew Cab models, bringing a moonroof, upgraded exterior lighting, leather upholstery, Nissan’s Intelligent Around-View monitor, and a premium audio system. A retro-inspired Hardbody Edition appearance package was also introduced. The truck already had a strong equipment list, including forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an available Wi-Fi hotspot. The Pro-4X trim kept its off-road focus with Bilstein shocks, underbody skid plates, and a locking rear differential, while also offering a surround-view camera, wireless device charging, and leatherette upholstery.

There are trade-offs, though. The Frontier is more comfortable and handles better than its predecessor, but it lacks rear passenger space compared with some other midsize trucks, and some models do without a telescopic steering column. Fuel economy is also not a strong point, with combined estimates ranging between 11.6 and 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres for standard third-generation Frontiers, and the Pro-4X rated slightly higher at 11.9 to 12.9 L/100 km combined. Even so, the 2024 Frontier remains appealing for buyers who want a capable, well-equipped pickup with rugged character and a broad mix of trims.
