Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — the 2024 Mazda CX-5 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Mazda positions it as an SUV for active urbanites, and it fits that brief well with stylish design, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, and impressive safety ratings. It is also genuinely enjoyable to drive, which helps explain why it remains appealing even without a full redesign.

The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy in Turbo models and outdated technology. For you, that means the CX-5 makes the most sense if you value driving enjoyment and a polished cabin more than maximum practicality or the latest infotainment.

The 2024 CX-5 is described as a vehicle that has been steadily refined rather than radically changed, and that continuous improvement has helped it stay competitive. Mazda also backs up the CX-5’s premium-brand positioning with style, quality, refinement, and dynamism.

Its performance character is a strength: the CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive, with responsive handling and a sophisticated feel. Mazda also includes remote engine starting, a find my car feature, and automatic 911 dialing through Mazda Connected Services.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the CX-5’s fuel economy, technology, and ownership benefits lag some rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes GS, GX, Kuro, GT, Sport Design, Suna, and Signature. Base versions get the core safety equipment, while higher trims add features such as adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, a driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
• Powertrain: You can shop base-engine versions or 2.5 Turbo models. The turbocharged 2.5-litre four delivers stronger output, but it is also the version called out for poor fuel economy.
• Safety package: Every CX-5 gets adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Some safety upgrades are reserved for higher trims.
• Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 10.25-inch display, and several trims add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mazda also offers touchscreen operation for those smartphone platforms while driving.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged version is rated at 9.8 L/100 km combined, with an observed 10.3 L/100 km on the evaluation loop. The base engine is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined, or 8.5 L/100 km with cylinder deactivation.

• Kuro: Choose this if you want a more distinctive appearance while staying within the mainstream part of the range.
• GT: This is a strong pick if you want a more upscale feel and more available convenience and technology.

• Deal availability: 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,159 listings available.

If you find a listing below $32,337 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $32,337 CAD sits slightly below last year's $35,073 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently today, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if the market stays well supplied. The CX-5’s premium feel and strong safety reputation should help support demand, especially among shoppers who value style and driving enjoyment. Still, its resale strength will depend on how well it continues to stand out against newer rivals with better fuel economy and technology.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a four-star rollover resistance rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda equips every version of the CX-5 with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims add adaptive headlights and traffic sign recognition, while the Signature reserves a driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.

The standard ADAS performed well in testing, especially the lane departure and lane-keeping systems, and the adaptive headlights are excellent on dark, unlit streets. The main caveat is that the CX-5 did not earn its previous IIHS Top Safety Pick designation in 2024.

Should I buy a 2024 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines refined styling, strong outward visibility, and standard advanced safety features.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $29,981 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $32,337 CAD average.
• It remains appealing thanks to its stylish design and enjoyable driving character.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $35,914 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $32,337 CAD average.
• It leans into a more desirable and sporty feel with an attractive, upscale package.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and the CX-5’s core strengths, the 2024 is the smart default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2023 is the value play; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling alternative, the 2025 is worth a look.
