How much does the 2023 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 11.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 187 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It fits you well if you want a luxury three-row crossover that leans into understated design, a beautiful interior, and a forward-thinking infotainment setup. The XC90’s appeal is rooted in style and sophistication rather than flash, and its tech is one of its strongest calling points.

The trade-offs are limited cargo space and a third row that is difficult to access. The technology can also feel too touchscreen-dependent.

With 40.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s reliability case is helped by its mature, well-established design and its move to B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains for 2023. The mild-hybrid setup is meant to smooth operation and improve efficiency, while the auto stop-start system is described as almost imperceptible.

Volvo’s mild-hybrid system uses a lithium-ion battery pack to support a starter generator rather than propulsion, which keeps the drivetrain concept relatively straightforward. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the XC90’s premium technology and packaging can be more demanding to live with if you expect simple, low-effort operation.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core, Plus, and Ultimate trims differ mainly in equipment level, with the Ultimate bringing the most upscale presentation. The base trim still includes standard all-wheel drive, heated front seats, and key safety tech, so you should check whether the extra comfort and convenience features in higher trims are worth the jump for you.
• Powertrain: For 2023, the XC90 moves to B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. The B6 uses a supercharger and turbo with mild-hybrid tech, and the system is tuned for smoother operation and slightly better fuel efficiency rather than electric-only driving.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. These features are standard, so trim choice should not affect access to the core safety package.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with Google OS, Bluetooth, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and support for Apple CarPlay. The system is smart, but many functions are buried in the touchscreen, so test it carefully.
• Fuel efficiency: The mild-hybrid setup is described as delivering only minimal fuel-economy gains, with benefits amounting to just a few litres at most.

Which 2023 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the value play if you want the XC90’s standard all-wheel drive, heated front seats, Google-based infotainment, and full safety suite without stretching for extras you may not need.
• Plus: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and price, especially if you value a more upscale daily experience without going all the way to the top.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most luxurious version and are willing to pay for the richest feature set.

The standard safety package is a strong selling point across the range, so you do not need to move up trims just to get the core driver-assistance tech.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

It looks like a buyer’s market right now, with pricing that has softened and a meaningful share of listings marked as good or great deals.

• Deal availability: 40.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 187 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.32% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $49,480 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $49,480 CAD sits slightly below last year's $55,798 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you are buying now, but it also means future resale upside may be more limited unless the market tightens. If you plan to sell later, the current trend suggests you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, along with adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Those systems support Volvo’s Pilot Assist technology, which helps maintain distance from the vehicle ahead from a standstill up to highway speed.

The main safety caveat is not about crash protection, but about how much of the XC90’s assistance and convenience experience is tied to the touchscreen interface.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 40.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.32% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings updated B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains and a strong standard safety suite.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $40,874 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $49,480 CAD average.
• It offers an elegant, tech-forward cabin with strong safety and available plug-in hybrid efficiency.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,937 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $49,480 CAD average.
• It carries over with timeless styling and a refined, comfortable luxury feel.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the best all-around choice if you want the updated mild-hybrid setup and a market that currently favours buyers. If price matters most, the 2022 is the smarter value pick; if you want the newest nearby version and do not mind paying more, the 2024 is the alternative.
