Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It presents as an understated luxury three-row crossover with a beautiful interior and a forward-thinking infotainment setup, so it suits you if you want style and sophistication over flash. The trade-offs are limited cargo space and a third row that is difficult to access, and the technology can feel too touchscreen-dependent.

With 40.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90 is described as a well-regarded, safety-focused luxury SUV with an enjoyable, reserved driving experience and strong braking confidence. Its mild-hybrid powertrains are designed to smooth operation and support better fuel efficiency, while the auto stop-start system is almost imperceptible.

Volvo’s mild-hybrid setup uses a lithium-ion battery pack and a 13-volt starter generator rather than propulsion from the electric side, which keeps the system relatively straightforward. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the XC90’s touchscreen-heavy controls may take time to live with, especially if you prefer more physical controls.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core, Plus, and Ultimate trims differ mainly in equipment and luxury touches, with the Ultimate bringing the most upscale presentation. Heated front seats are standard, and the cabin’s premium materials are a major part of the appeal.
• Powertrain: For 2023, the XC90 uses B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains in the broader model line, with the B6 described as the main Canadian setup here. The mild-hybrid system improves smoothness and efficiency, but it is not a full hybrid and cannot drive on electricity alone.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist is standard, along with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. These features are standard equipment, so you should confirm they are functioning properly on any used example.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with Google OS, Google Maps, Google Assistant, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a 12.3-inch driver display. The system is advanced, but many functions are buried in the touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: The mild-hybrid setup is intended to improve fuel efficiency, but the gains are described as modest rather than dramatic.

Which 2023 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it gives you the XC90’s core luxury, safety, and tech experience without stretching the budget as far as the higher trims.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim if you want a stronger balance of equipment and price, especially since it adds more of the upscale feel buyers expect from the XC90.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most luxurious presentation and the richest feature set, including the most dramatic cabin treatment.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim to get the XC90’s key driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

What is the 2023 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $50,026 CAD sits slightly below last year's $55,613 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the XC90 has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may benefit from a more stable entry point than owners who purchased when prices were higher. The model’s strong reputation and broad appeal should help support demand, but condition and trim will matter when it is time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.05% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 update brings B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains and Google OS infotainment.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $41,379 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $50,026 CAD average.
• It offers an elegant, tech-forward cabin with strong family appeal.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,977 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $50,026 CAD average.
• It carries over with timeless styling and a refined, comfortable feel.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, modern tech, and current-year value, the 2023 is the smart default. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 is the better budget path. If you want the newer model-year carryover and do not mind paying more, the 2024 remains a polished alternative.
