Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It stands out as an understated luxury three-row crossover with a familiar but not dated design, a beautiful cabin, and impressive technology. It also benefits from updated B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains for 2023, which helps keep it current.

The trade-offs are limited cargo space and a third row that is difficult to access. The technology can also feel too touchscreen-dependent, which may matter if you prefer more physical controls.

With 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is a decent amount of market flexibility if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s reputation for safety and its well-regarded design point to a vehicle that should feel reassuring over time. Its mild-hybrid setup also helps modernise the powertrain without making the SUV feel unfamiliar.

The performance side is described as enjoyable, reserved, and smooth, with strong brakes and a transmission that rarely skips a beat. The mild-hybrid system also helps the auto stop-start function feel almost imperceptible.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the XC90’s touchscreen-heavy controls and packaging compromises.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core, Plus, and Ultimate trims differ in equipment, and the base trim still gets standard all-wheel drive in Canada plus heated front seats and keyless entry. Higher trims add more luxury content, but the XC90’s minimalist layout means you should check whether the features you want are easy to access and use.
• Powertrain: The 2023 XC90 uses B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains, replacing the older T5 and T6 engines. The setup is tuned for smoother operation and slightly better fuel efficiency, but it is not a full hybrid and cannot drive on electricity alone.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist is standard, along with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. These systems are a major strength, so make sure they function properly on any used example.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a 9-inch vertical touchscreen with Google OS, Google Maps, Google Assistant, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay support. It does not lean heavily on physical controls, so test the interface carefully before you buy.
• Fuel efficiency: The mild-hybrid system is intended to improve efficiency, but the gains are described as minimal.

Which 2023 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you standard all-wheel drive in Canada, heated front seats, keyless entry, and the XC90’s core safety tech. If you want the XC90 experience without stretching for extra luxury features, this is the trim to start with.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim if you want a stronger balance of equipment and price. It adds more content than Core while staying below the top trim’s pricing, and it can be a smart middle ground for shoppers who want more comfort without going all the way to Ultimate.
• Ultimate: This is the most luxurious version, and it suits you if you want the richest cabin presentation and the most upscale feel. It is the trim to choose if you care most about premium materials and top-end ambience.

Safety tech is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the XC90’s core driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 203 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.94% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $49,008 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $49,008 CAD sits slightly below last year's $56,947 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests sellers may need to be realistic when it is time to trade in or list the vehicle privately. A model year that has already moved down in price can face more competition from newer used examples and shoppers comparing across trims.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 earns a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2022.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, along with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Volvo’s Pilot Assist system. Pilot Assist helps maintain distance from the vehicle ahead from a standstill up to highway speed.

That standard safety suite is a major strength, and it means you do not need to move up the trim ladder to get the XC90’s core driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2023 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.94% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings updated B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains and Google-based infotainment.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $39,757 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $49,008 CAD average.
• It offers an available plug-in hybrid and stronger efficiency focus.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,946 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $49,008 CAD average.
• It adds a broader powertrain lineup and remains appealing inside and out.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the best all-around pick if you want the updated mild-hybrid setup and current-market pricing. If your priority is lower purchase cost, the 2022 is the better value path.
