What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2023 4Runner lineup includes the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro. The base setup is intentionally simple, while the special edition adds retro styling touches, bronze accents, and a numbered plaque. If you want the most distinctive appearance, the 40th Anniversary Special Edition stands out; if you want the most capability-focused setup, the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro are the trims to examine closely.
• Powertrain: Every 2023 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with a five-speed automatic and standard four-wheel drive. It is built for durability and off-road use rather than quick acceleration, and the full-time 4WD system is limited to the Limited trim.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
• Infotainment: The largest touchscreen is 8 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. You also get real knobs and buttons, which can be easier to use in cold weather or with gloves on.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner is rated at 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 13.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula without the extra styling or hardware upgrades. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry point into the lineup and are comfortable with the simpler setup.
• TRD Sport: This trim adds a suspension tuned to improve on-road athleticism, so it suits you if you spend more time on pavement but still want the 4Runner’s rugged character.
• Limited: This is the best fit if you want the most road-oriented comfort and the full-time 4WD system. It is the trim to consider if you value everyday usability over trail hardware.
• 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the style pick, with retro stripes, bronze wheels, bronze badges, bronze stitching, and a numbered plaque. It is best if you want a collectible-feeling 4Runner with a distinctive look.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to choose if off-road ability matters most, thanks to its suspension that improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road-focused trim, with a skid plate and a suspension tuned for high-speed performance in the dirt with front and rear Fox shock absorbers.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on every trim level.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 39.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 134 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.61% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $54,693 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $55,106 CAD sits slightly below last year's $59,007 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more selectively today, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from a stronger position. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means you may not see the same pricing strength that was available a year ago.

Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and durability should continue to support demand among buyers who want a rugged SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with no better than a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and a three-star rating for rollover resistance. The IIHS gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.

The main caveat is that its crash-test results lag behind newer rivals, especially for frontal-impact protection and rollover resistance. That is the trade-off for its older platform and truck-based design.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 39.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.61% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,776 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $55,106 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged, old-school SUV character alive while still handling everyday duties.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $57,431 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $55,106 CAD average.
• It adds a loyal following built around reliability, durability, and strong off-road appeal.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the updated safety equipment and the special-edition appeal. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer listing, the 2024 remains a similar proposition at a higher cost.
