overall

Summary

Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda CX-50 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 stands out as a stylish compact crossover that is designed to suit active lifestyles. Mazda positions it as a complement to the CX-5 rather than a replacement, and it is aimed more at adventure seekers than at the urban-focused buyers typically drawn to the CX-5. It also shares powertrains and underlying technology with the CX-5, but uses a longer, lower, and wider design that gives it a different character.
That shape helps the 2023 Mazda CX-50 offer slightly more rear-seat room and practical cargo space, which should appeal to buyers who want a crossover that feels useful without giving up Mazda’s emphasis on driving enjoyment. It is described as fun to drive, and its standard advanced safety features add to its appeal. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is unintuitive, storage space is limited, and its value proposition can be challenging.
Owner feedback broadly reinforces the car’s strengths, with praise for its stylish design, quality interior, and good performance, especially with the turbo engine. Some owners also point to a spacious cargo area. On the downside, a stiff ride, hard seats, and a less effective non-turbo engine are recurring concerns.

If you’re looking for great gas mileage with good cargo space and legroom, this is the vehicle for you. Gorgeous interior finishes with numerous options for enhancements and sharp exterior. We are having to order because of the super low inventory everywhere. We found the extra cost for the turbo engine to be worth it.

We were replacing a CX-50 we lost to a tree fall in a storm . We had only had the vehicle for about seven months and we knew we wanted the exact same car. We like the wide stance and roominess in a vehicle you can still park in a standard space with room to get in and out. It carries four tall people without being cramped. It’s practical and rugged and features a lot of the kind of comfort and luxury associated with higher priced cars. The technology is easy to use and enhances rather than distracting from the driver experience.

Ideal drivers commuter car that can handle family duty. Roomy back seat and cargo area, fun to drive, gas mileage is fine. Steering is stiffer than average but contributes to stability and less need for safety system intervention. Meridian edition is mostly trim and tires, but it looks cool and different.

| Year-Round High | $36,846 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,857 CAD |

Prices have softened 10.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 293 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Mazda CX-50 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its stylish design, quality interior, and good performance, especially with the turbo engine. They also like the spacious cargo area and the sleek infotainment system.
The trade-offs are a stiff ride and hard seats, along with a less effective non-turbo engine. Mazda positions it as a more adventure-oriented complement to the CX-5, so it makes the most sense if you want a crossover that feels useful and engaging rather than purely urban-focused.
With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling vehicle with strong satisfaction around its stylish design, quality interior, and good performance. The same feedback also highlights the spacious cargo area, which supports the sense that it is a practical vehicle you can count on day to day.
Mazda’s testing also describes the CX-50 as delivering reliable towing capability, and the powertrain is presented as smooth and durable in use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a few comfort and usability complaints may affect how satisfied you feel over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GS-L and GT trims use the 187-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while the GT Turbo and Meridian Edition add the stronger turbocharged engine. Higher trims also bring a more upscale cabin, and the Meridian Edition adds exclusive wheels, all-terrain tires, splash guards, and a roof-mounted load platform.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, or a turbocharged version that increases output and towing capacity. The turbo engine is the one to choose if you want stronger acceleration and more capability.
- Safety package: Mazda’s driver-assistance suite is standard across the lineup, including active blind-spot monitoring. Base trims miss some upgrades that are standard on the rest of the range, including Traffic Jam Assist, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Every CX-50 has a 10.25-inch Mazda Connect display with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services. Touchscreen control is available for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but Mazda Connect itself still relies heavily on console controls.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 9.7 L/100 km city, 7.9 highway, and 8.9 combined. The turbo engine is rated at 10.4 L/100 km city, 8.1 highway, and 9.4 combined.
Which 2023 Mazda CX-50 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is offered in 4 trim levels: GS-L, GT, GT Turbo, Meridian Edition.
Here's the short version:
- GS-L: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-50 experience with the standard engine and all-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you should be aware that some of the more useful safety and convenience upgrades are reserved for higher trims.
- GT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it keeps the standard engine while adding the more appealing equipment balance. If you want the CX-50’s style, safety, and everyday usability without paying turbo-model money, this is the trim to focus on.
- GT Turbo: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine, better acceleration, and the higher towing rating. It suits you best if performance matters more than keeping fuel use and purchase price down.
- Meridian Edition: This is the most outdoors-focused version, with exclusive wheels, all-terrain tires, splash guards, and a roof-mounted load platform. It is the right pick if you want the CX-50’s rugged look and extra adventure-oriented hardware.
Mazda’s safety package is generous, but the base trim misses a handful of upgrades that are standard elsewhere in the range.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-50?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping rather than impulse buying.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 293 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.41% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $33,022 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda CX-50's resale value?
The current average of $33,022 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,857 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-50 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the current average or below it, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it comes time to sell.
The model’s premium positioning and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially for well-equipped examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-50 safe?
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, and it has not been rated by NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s standard driver-assistance suite includes active blind-spot monitoring, and higher trims add Traffic Jam Assist, front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system. The surround-view camera and parking sensors are especially useful in daily driving.
The main caveat is that the CX-50 falls short of Top Safety Pick+ because of some headlight configurations, plus weaker results in night-time pedestrian collision avoidance and the updated side crash test. Base trims also miss some of the more advanced convenience and parking aids.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-50 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It launches the CX-50 as a stylish, adventure-oriented complement to the CX-5.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $37,881 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $33,022 CAD average.
- It leans more rugged and outdoorsy.
The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2023 is the smarter buy because prices have already softened and inventory is available. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model year and a slightly more rugged positioning, the 2024 is the secondary path.
