Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 earns 4.33/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its stylish design, advanced technology, and comfortable ride. They also like the variety of options and the improved interior compared with older models. On the flip side, some shoppers note rising prices and concerns about long-term engine problems.

That lines up with the truck’s positioning: it’s aimed at you if you want a highly equipped full-size pickup with broad capability and a more premium feel, not just a bare-bones work truck. The trade-offs are that there can be too much technology for a truck, and cabin quality still trails the competition.

User feedback points to a truck that feels dependable, comfortable, and well suited to long-term ownership when properly maintained. The diesel powertrain also gets called out for its lively character, which supports the sense that the Sierra can be a truck you count on day to day.

The five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty adds some ownership reassurance, especially if you’re shopping used and want extra protection against major mechanical risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro is the simplest version and keeps the older, more intuitive infotainment layout, but it misses some basics such as a tilt and telescoping steering column. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, with the Denali Ultimate bringing nearly every feature optional on other trims.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre Duramax turbocharged inline-six diesel, a 5.3-litre V8, or a 6.2-litre V8. The diesel stands out for its lively feel and strong efficiency.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and GM’s Teen Driver system. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and GM’s Safety Alert seat. Super Cruise is included on the Denali Ultimate.
• Infotainment: The Pro uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Every other trim gets a 13.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Google-connected apps.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax turbo diesel with rear-wheel drive is the most efficient setup at 10.1 L/100 km city, 8.1 highway, and 9.2 combined. The 2.7-litre turbo-four returns 12.7/11.2/12.0, the 5.3-litre V8 returns 14.3/11.2/12.9, and the 6.2-litre V8 with mud-terrain tyres is the least efficient at 16.7/14.0/15.5.

Which 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the Sierra’s core capability and the simpler 7-inch infotainment system. It’s the best fit if you prefer a more traditional truck layout and don’t need the latest luxury features.
• SLE: This is the trim that adds the most everyday comfort and convenience for the money, including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital instrument panel. It’s the best-value trim for many shoppers.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want the SLE’s equipment with a more style-forward presentation and access to additional options and packages.
• SLT: This is the step up for you if leather upholstery, memory settings, and a power-adjustable front passenger seat matter more than pure value.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented choice, with standard 4WD, skid plates, a lifted suspension, a two-speed transfer case, and an upgraded air filter.
• AT4X: This is the more serious trail-focused model, with AEV-developed hardware, steel bumpers, an integrated front winch, mud-terrain tyres, upgraded dampers, and locking differentials.
• Denali: Pick this if you want a luxury truck with ventilated front seats, wireless charging, a Bose premium audio system, and a bed-view camera.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury pick, with massaging front seats, full-grain leather, unique interior detailing, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, and nearly every available feature.

The safety package is strongest on the Denali Ultimate, which gets every available driver-assistance feature, including Super Cruise.

• Inventory: There are 1,437 listings available.

What is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $49,624 CAD sits slightly below last year's $56,197 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays cool. If you plan to sell later, the truck’s premium positioning and broad trim range should help it hold interest, especially among buyers looking for a well-equipped full-size pickup.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and GM’s Safety Alert seat.

The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims, with Super Cruise limited to the Denali Ultimate.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Denali Ultimate, which pushes luxury and equipment further than earlier versions.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $46,745 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $49,624 CAD average.
• It introduced the major redesign and a more lavish interior.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $54,756 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $49,624 CAD average.
• It broadens flexibility with strong tech, multiple powertrains, and a fuel-efficient diesel.

The bottom line: If you want the most compelling mix of luxury, features, and current-market pricing, the 2023 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer alternative, the 2024 is worth a look.
