Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Generally — 4.33/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is a strong fit if you want a full-size pickup that leans premium rather than purely utilitarian. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its stylish design, advanced technology, and comfortable ride, and many also like the variety of options and the improved interior. The truck’s broad feature spread and cabin space make it especially appealing if you want a highly equipped pickup for daily use, family duty, or long-distance comfort.

The trade-offs are that there can be too much technology for a truck, the cabin quality still trails the competition, and city parking can be a challenge without tech aids. Even so, the market shows 36.9% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as dependable, comfortable, and a truck they can count on, with praise for its improved interior and overall versatility. The diesel powertrain also gets singled out for being lively and well matched to the transmission, which supports confidence in everyday use.

The five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty adds some reassurance, but used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and any signs of engine-related concerns.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro is the simplest version, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED headlamps, remote keyless entry, cloth seats, daytime running lamps, and Bluetooth connectivity, but it misses some basics such as a tilt and telescoping steering column. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, while the Denali Ultimate brings nearly every feature optional on other trims.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre Duramax turbocharged inline-six diesel, a 5.3-litre V8, or a 6.2-litre V8. The diesel is the most efficient setup, and the 10-speed automatic helps keep it in its power band.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and GM’s Teen Driver system. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, GM’s Safety Alert seat, and Super Cruise.
• Infotainment: The Pro uses a 7-inch touchscreen with the carryover system, while every other trim gets a 13.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The updated system also includes Google-connected apps and a logical layout, though it can feel overly connected.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax turbo diesel with RWD returns 10.1 L/100 km in the city, 8.1 on the highway, and 9.2 combined. With 4WD, it rises to 10.7 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.8 combined. The gas turbo-four returns 12.7 city, 11.2 highway, and 12.0 combined, while the 5.3-litre V8 returns 14.3 city, 11.2 highway, and 12.9 combined. The 6.2-litre V8 with mud terrain tires is the least efficient at 16.7 city, 14.0 highway, and 15.5 combined.

Which 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the Sierra’s core capability and the simpler 7-inch infotainment setup. It suits you best if you prefer a more straightforward truck and do not need the richer comfort and tech upgrades.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fully digital instrument panel, a larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, extra USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Elevation: This trim keeps most of the SLE’s equipment while making certain options and packages available, so it makes sense if you want a more personalised build.
• SLT: This is the first trim that clearly steps into upscale territory with leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and memory settings for the driver’s seat.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-oriented setup, with standard 4WD, skid plates, a lifted suspension, a two-speed transfer case, and an upgraded air filter.
• AT4X: This is the more serious trail-focused choice, with steel bumpers, an integrated front winch, 33-inch mud-terrain tires, additional skid plates, upgraded Multimatic dampers, and electronically locking front and rear differentials.
• Denali: Pick this if you want luxury features such as unique styling elements, a Bose premium audio system, ventilated front seats, wireless device charging, and a camera view of the truck bed.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most lavish Sierra experience, with full-grain leather, massaging front seats, 22-inch wheels, a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, and nearly every feature optional on other trims.

For safety, the standard driver-assistance suite is strong, but the most advanced features are concentrated on higher trims, especially the Denali Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

The market looks moderately favourable if you are a selective buyer and are willing to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,428 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.35% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $49,962 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $49,962 CAD sits slightly below last year's $57,001 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the truck more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, it means you may not recover as much as owners did a year ago if prices stay soft.

Even so, the Sierra’s premium positioning, broad trim range, and strong owner satisfaction help support demand. Trucks with a loyal following and a reputation for comfort and versatility often hold attention better than more ordinary alternatives.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and GM’s Teen Driver system. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, GM’s Safety Alert seat, and Super Cruise.

The main caveat is that some of the most useful driver-assistance features are not standard across the lineup, so you may need to move up a trim to get the full safety package.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.35% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Denali Ultimate, which pushes the Sierra further into luxury-truck territory.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $47,170 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $49,962 CAD average.
• It brings a major makeover with bolder styling, a richer cabin, and expanded utility.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,109 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $49,962 CAD average.
• It broadens flexibility with strong powertrain choice and easier day-to-day livability.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the Denali Ultimate and a well-equipped premium truck at a softer price than newer stock. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer model-year alternative.
