Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?

Generally — the 2022 Toyota Corolla earns 4.2/5 from owners and 7.2/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and many also like the feature set. The expert review also points to its multiple body styles, multiple powertrain options, and manual transmission availability as real strengths.

The trade-offs are clear: outdated technology and sluggish performance are recurring concerns, and the design may not suit everyone. For you, that means the Corolla makes the most sense if you want a straightforward compact car with broad everyday appeal rather than the most exciting or most modern-feeling option.

Good and great deals account for 28.2% of listings, which is a decent sign that there are worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Toyota’s warranty coverage is in line with the segment, and the Corolla’s broad appeal, strong safety record, and practical setup all support confidence in day-to-day use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s older-feeling tech and modest performance will still suit your needs over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Corolla sedan is available in L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE. The base L is the most stripped-down version, with a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch screen and more available equipment. If you want the best-value balance of features and price, the LE is the trim to focus on.
• Powertrain: You get a 1.8-litre four-cylinder with 139 horsepower in L, LE, and XLE models, or a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 169 hp in SE, XSE, and Apex Edition models. The base L can be had with a six-speed manual, while the 2.0-litre engine can also be paired with a six-speed manual or a CVT.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE.
• Infotainment: The base L gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trim levels get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre engine with CVT is rated at 7.9 L/100 km in city driving, 5.9 on the highway, and 6.8 combined. The manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 8.2 L/100 km city, 6.5 highway, and 7.4 combined.

Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 7 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, Apex Edition, and Nightshade Edition.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the cheapest way into the Corolla, but it is also the most basic. You get the smaller touchscreen and fewer convenience features, so it suits you best if price matters more than equipment.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without pushing the price too far. It also brings standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, which makes it the smart pick for many used buyers.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented Corolla with the stronger equipment mix from the upper end of the range.
• SE: This is the better choice if you want a sportier feel and more expressive styling without going all the way to the top trims.
• XSE: This is the most upscale mainstream Corolla sedan trim, and it suits you if you want the most equipment and the strongest feature set short of the special editions.
• Apex Edition: This is the enthusiast-leaning choice. It adds a sport exhaust and model-specific suspension tuning, but the trade-off is a stiffer ride and no major engine, brake, or tyre upgrades.
• Nightshade Edition: This is mainly for you if appearance matters most, since it adds blacked-out trim and a more distinctive look.

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should have some room to shop around without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 507 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.98% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $22,254 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $22,268 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,465 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if market conditions stay similar. If you own one, the current trend points to a model that is still desirable, but not immune to broader price pressure in the used market.

The Corolla’s broad appeal, practical reputation, and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. Even so, resale value will likely depend on trim, condition, mileage, and whether the car’s equipment level matches what used shoppers want most.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla earns a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE.

The main caveat is that the headlights received lower IIHS ratings depending on trim level, so you should pay attention to the specific version you are considering.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.98% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Corolla’s broad choice of body styles, transmissions, and powertrains, including a manual and a hybrid.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $20,775 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,268 CAD average.
• It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging personality than many compact commuters.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the broader market context, strong safety, and a still-fresh Corolla with plenty of choice. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Corolla basics well.

How does the 2022 Toyota Corolla compare to the 2022 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2022 Toyota Corolla 7.2/10 and the 2022 Honda Civic 7.7/10. The Civic edges ahead overall, but the Corolla still makes a strong case if you value choice, safety, and a lower average used price. The Corolla’s strengths are practicality, multiple powertrain options, and a manual transmission, while its main drawbacks are outdated technology and sluggish performance.
