Is the 2022 Subaru WRX a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru WRX earns a 4.9/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its thrilling performance, sporty character, and all-wheel-drive versatility. It also stands out for blending driving enjoyment with everyday commuting usefulness, which fits the WRX’s performance-first but practical personality. With a market share of 38.8% good and great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Subaru WRX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with strong value and confidence in the car’s all-wheel-drive setup. The expert drive notes also support that impression by highlighting the WRX’s solid engineering and its ability to handle rougher roads without feeling unwieldy. Subaru’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some owners mention minor paint damage and occasional slow performance in certain situations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru WRX?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-back version, while Sport and Sport-tech add more equipment and safety content. If you want the most complete package, the higher trims are the ones to focus on.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine with a six-speed manual or a CVT called the Subaru Performance Transmission. The manual uses continuous AWD split 50/50 front to rear, while the CVT uses variable torque distribution.
• Safety package: EyeSight comes standard on CVT-equipped models and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic steering assist, and an electronic brake booster. Manual models do not get EyeSight. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Sport and Sport-tech trims, but not on the base trim.
• Infotainment: Sport-trim and higher models get an 11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen. The base trim uses two stacked 7-inch displays. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the manual at 12.3 L/100 km in city driving, 9.0 on the highway, and 10.8 combined. The CVT is rated at 12.7 city, 9.4 highway, and 11.2 combined.

Which 2022 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Sport, and Sport-tech.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the WRX’s core performance and all-wheel-drive hardware at the lowest price. You give up the larger 11.6-inch screen and the extra driver-assistance features found higher up the range.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen and brings the cabin and tech experience up a level. It also unlocks more safety content, making it the sweet spot if you want the most complete WRX without stretching to the top trim.
• Sport-tech: Choose this if you want the most fully equipped WRX and are willing to pay for it. It builds on the Sport trim with the highest level of equipment in the range.

EyeSight is standard on CVT-equipped models, while blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Sport and Sport-tech trims regardless of transmission.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru WRX?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 139 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.08% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,261 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru WRX's resale value?

The current average of $28,270 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,438 CAD.

That price movement suggests the WRX has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the car is especially clean or well equipped. The current market also shows that shoppers are still comparing value closely, so condition, trim, and transmission choice will matter. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru WRX safe?

The 2022 Subaru WRX earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.

Safety is strongest in CVT-equipped models, which come standard with Subaru’s EyeSight suite. That system includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic steering assist, and an electronic brake booster. Manual WRX models do not get EyeSight, and that is an important gap to keep in mind if safety tech is a priority.

Separate from EyeSight, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Sport and Sport-tech trims, but not on the base trim. The car also comes with seven airbags, including a driver’s-side knee airbag, and the newer platform is designed to absorb more energy in a crash than the previous architecture.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.08% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a more refined chassis, updated tech, and a stronger all-weather performance focus.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $30,905 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,270 CAD average.
• It carries over the same fourth-generation formula with no changes.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better value if you want the newest WRX formula at a lower used price. If you are price-sensitive, the 2022 makes more sense; if you want to pay more for a newer model year with the same basic package, the 2023 is the straightforward alternative.

How does the 2022 Subaru WRX compare to the 2022 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2022 Subaru WRX 6.8/10 and the 2022 Honda Civic 7.7/10. The WRX is the more specialised choice if you want all-wheel-drive performance and a more enthusiast-focused driving experience. The Civic is the stronger value play on price and availability, with a much larger pool of listings to shop from. If you want traction and character, the WRX has the edge; if you want a broader used-market selection and a lower average price, the Civic is easier to shop.
