CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 21 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,469 CAD, 19.0% of 2022 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Outback 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness stands out as a more capable, adventure-focused version of Subaru’s familiar all-wheel-drive formula. Subaru positions it as part of a new family of even more capable SUVs, and it is presented as the first of several so-themed SUVs planned for the brand’s product pipeline. That makes it distinctive not just as a rugged variant, but as the opening move in a broader off-road-oriented direction for Subaru.
Its appeal is tied to the way it aims to improve outdoor capability without undermining the driver-assistance technology that many owners value. Subaru says owners often modify their vehicles for better off-road performance, but that can reduce the effectiveness of the EyeSight driving aids that now come standard on most of the automaker’s models. The 2022 Outback Wilderness is Subaru’s answer to that problem, offering the tougher, more adventurous character buyers want while keeping the brand’s safety technology in mind. Owners also tend to praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, and rugged appearance, though some note that the power could be better and that the infotainment system can be a bit complicated.

Car is good value. The car is missing more customizable features in the entertainment system such as visual preferences & saving settings (i.e. A.S.S. feature off).

The car has great pick-up speed for highway driving; it has a smooth, comfortable ride! We love the updated screen for the apps as it is much larger and easier to see. There is still the blind-spot assist on the side mirrors, and it is a car that I am now buying for the second time. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!

The Subaru Outback is a great value for the price. We love all the safety features, the infotainment works well and the outback drives great in snowy conditions. My wife, kids and I could not be any happier with our purchase.

How much does the 2022 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,629 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $28,627 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $32,508 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,508 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.93% |
Prices have softened 11.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 308 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, and rugged look. It also comes across as a strong value for the price, with a driving experience that suits buyers who want utility and confidence in poor weather. If you want a practical, adventure-leaning vehicle with everyday usefulness, this model year fits that brief well.
The market also shows 31.5% of listings as good or great deals, which points to decent shopping opportunities.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its safety, snowy-weather performance, and overall value. The expert assessment also frames it as a capable, confidence-inspiring choice for regular driving and rough-weather use. Subaru’s EyeSight system is carefully calibrated from the factory, which helps preserve its effectiveness when the vehicle is left unmodified.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that modifications can reduce the effectiveness of the driver-assistance systems, so a stock example is the safer bet.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Wilderness trim adds 23 cm of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tyres, improved approach and departure angles, black 17-inch wheels, Anodized Copper accents, a matte black hood decal, and a roof rack and rail system rated for a 700-pound static load. It also gets StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, a black headliner, brushed aluminium pedals, standard all-weather floor mats, waterproof rear seatback material, and a waterproof cargo tray.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It also has revised final-drive ratios, paddle shifters, and a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. It also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
- Infotainment: The Wilderness uses an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with integrated climate control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but most functions run through the screen.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it should use 10.9 L/100 km in the city and 8.9 L/100 km on the highway.
Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 1 trim level: Wilderness.
Here's the short version:
The Wilderness is the one to buy if you want the most rugged, adventure-focused Outback with the strongest off-pavement hardware and the most distinctive look. It adds the lifted stance, all-terrain tyres, skid plating, X-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes, hill descent control, and the unique exterior and interior treatment that set it apart. It suits you best if you value capability and weather confidence more than on-road sharpness or a simpler cabin layout.
The safety package is standard on this trim, but DriverFocus is not included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 308 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $28,627 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $28,629 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,508 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be helpful if you're buying now but less favourable if you're planning to sell soon. A softer market often means future sellers may need to price more competitively to attract attention. Still, the model's broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness was not crash-tested as this review was written. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, standard Outbacks earned a "Top Safety Pick+" safety rating for 2021. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2021 Outback a five-star overall rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.
One caveat is that DriverFocus is not included on this trim, even though it is available on Limited and Premier models.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The Wilderness adds the most capable Outback hardware and keeps EyeSight standard.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,346 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,629 CAD average.
- It focuses on practicality, reliability, and low running costs.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $31,401 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,629 CAD average.
- It adds fresh styling, updated infotainment, and new safety technology.
The bottom line: If you want the rugged Wilderness formula and strong safety tech, the 2022 is the right target. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play; if you want newer updates, the 2023 is worth the extra spend.
