Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.6/5 user-rated SUV with an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

That lines up well with the Forester’s practical, all-around focus in the overview, especially if you want a compact SUV that puts everyday usefulness first. The market also shows 37.9% good and great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Forester’s durability and all-weather confidence. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core reliability and more about whether the vehicle’s modest power and dated feel will still suit your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gets the essentials, but higher trims add more comfort and convenience, and the Wilderness brings a much tougher look and off-road focus. The cabin is functional rather than flashy, so you should decide whether you want the simplest value play or a better-equipped version with more premium touches.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT and standard AWD. It’s tuned more for everyday usability than strong acceleration, so make sure its performance matches your expectations.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also part of the safety story, while DriverFocus is reserved for Limited and Premier trims.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. Touring and higher trims get an 8-inch screen, with available navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
• Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the Wilderness should consume 9.0 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 9.1 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 7 trim levels: base, Convenience, Touring, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest cost. You still get standard AWD, EyeSight 4.0, and the 6.5-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring, so it covers the essentials well.
• Convenience: This is the value-focused step up if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder. It should suit you if you want a practical daily driver with a bit more comfort than the base model.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim if you want the richer infotainment setup, because it brings the 8-inch screen and opens the door to available navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more style-forward version of the Forester without going all the way to the Wilderness. It fits buyers who want a bit more personality in their daily SUV.
• Wilderness: This is the one to buy if you want the most adventurous Forester. It adds extra clearance, more body cladding, an interior designed to get dirty, a 180-degree forward-view camera, all-terrain tyres, and a skid plate.
• Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want more comfort and the DriverFocus system. It’s a strong pick for buyers who value added safety tech and a more upscale feel.
• Premier: This is the top-end choice if you want the most complete Forester experience. It builds on the higher-trim equipment and suits you if you want the most premium version available.

Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus, while the Wilderness may need separate safety re-testing because of its modified height.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 206 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.94% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,953 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $28,164 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,271 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Forester has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if the market stays steady. A softer current price can also mean less upside in the short term, but it may help keep the vehicle competitive against other compact SUVs. Strong owner satisfaction and the Forester’s reputation for practicality should continue to support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it receives a four-star rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking. Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.

The main caveat is that the Wilderness may require separate safety testing because of its modified height.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.94% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds fresh design details, upgraded EyeSight tech, and the new Wilderness trim.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $30,014 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,164 CAD average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2022 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and useful updates. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year and slightly improved tech, the 2023 is worth a look; otherwise, the 2022 gives you the stronger price-to-practicality balance.
