What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Preferred is the value play, but it is the least equipped; higher trims add features such as a panoramic sunroof, leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and more premium audio and display equipment.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder on Preferred, a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder on Sport and Luxury, and a 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder in the N Line. All Sonatas are front-wheel drive, and all use an eight-speed automatic, while the N Line uses an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
• Infotainment: Base SE versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, six speakers, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, and a rear-view camera. Higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, and some trims add a 12-speaker Bose audio system and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 L/100 km on lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km on the N Line. During testing, the Sonata averaged 7.7 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Sonata’s core strengths without paying for extras. It includes LED lighting, heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and the 8-inch touchscreen, making it the smart pick for budget-conscious shoppers.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without jumping to the top of the range. It adds a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, satellite radio, and larger wheels, so it suits you if comfort and appearance matter more than outright luxury.
• Luxury: This is the best choice if you want the most comfort-oriented gas trim. Leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, the Bose audio system, and the upgraded instrument display make it the most polished everyday version.
• N Line: Pick this if you want the Sonata’s sporty side. It adds the 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, sport suspension, tuned exhaust, unique styling, the larger touchscreen with navigation, Highway Drive Assist, and the 12.3-inch gauge display.

For safety equipment, all trims get a strong standard driver-assistance suite, but the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid are the trims to target if you want Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and the blind-spot view monitor.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 130 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.30% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,693 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $22,021 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,550 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively to stand out. The Sonata’s strong value story and broad trim range should still help it attract shoppers who want a well-equipped midsize sedan without paying top-tier prices.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance. It also earns top Good ratings in all six IIHS crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sonata comes with a comprehensive standard safety suite that includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.

One caveat is that IIHS gave the Sonata’s child-seat anchors an Acceptable rating, and all trims except the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid received a Marginal rating for crash avoidance and mitigation with LED reflector headlights.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 stands out for exceptional value, quality, and the availability of a sporty N Line variant.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $18,929 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,021 CAD average.
• It is a credible choice for drivers who want a fun-to-drive sedan with passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around used buy, the 2022 is the better target because it combines value, quality, and a broader trim mix. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better price-sensitive alternative and still delivers the Sonata’s practical sport-sedan appeal.
