Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

The Sonata’s appeal comes from its strong value, quality feel, and broad range of use cases, from everyday commuting to the sportier N Line. It remains relevant in a shrinking midsize-sedan segment by leaning into practicality, a well-finished cabin, and a distinctive personality rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Sonata is described as a competent, serene sedan with a smooth ride, solid road manners, and a quiet cabin. Its powertrains are straightforward, and the available eight-speed automatic and wet dual-clutch transmission are paired with front-wheel drive only. The expert evaluation also points to a strong overall ownership proposition, with value and quality as recurring strengths.

Hyundai’s five-year or 100,000 kilometre powertrain warranty adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about basic dependability and more about choosing the right trim and condition so you get the equipment and features you expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Preferred trim gives you the essentials, while Sport, Luxury, and N Line add progressively more equipment and a more distinctive character. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about premium comfort or a larger screen.
• Powertrain: The Preferred uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while Sport and Luxury use a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder. The N Line stands apart with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a wet dual-clutch automatic, sport suspension, and a tuned exhaust.
• Safety package: Hyundai’s standard suite includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line.
• Infotainment: Base trims get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, and some trims add a 12-speaker Bose audio system and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 L/100 km on lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km on the N Line. The test result of 7.7 L/100 km shows the Sonata can be efficient for a midsize sedan.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and the core safety and convenience features. It suits you best if you want a well-equipped daily driver without paying for extras you may not use.
• Sport: This is the best-value upgrade if you want more style and comfort without jumping to the top end. The panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and larger wheels make it feel more complete.
• Luxury: This is the trim to choose if you want the most comfort-focused version. The leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and Bose audio system make it the most upscale mainstream choice.
• N Line: This is the one for you if you want the Sonata’s sportiest personality. It adds the 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, sport suspension, wet DCT, unique styling, and extra tech.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid get the better headlight rating in IIHS testing.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 138 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.19% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,693 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $22,323 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,855 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Sonata has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to stand out in a market where values have already adjusted downward. The good news is that the model’s strong value story and broad appeal can still support buyer interest when the car is well equipped and well maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five stars for overall crash protection from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it top "Good" ratings in all six crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line.

One caveat is that IIHS crash avoidance and mitigation testing rated the Sonata’s LED reflector headlights as "Marginal" on most trims, while the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid with LED projector headlights earned a "Good" rating.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, quality, and a sporty N Line variant.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $18,989 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,323 CAD average.
• It is a rare traditional sport sedan with passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the stronger all-around package, better current-market context, and a broader trim range. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is the better value-focused alternative, especially if you want a more performance-leaning sedan.
