Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz stands out because Hyundai’s first pickup takes a different approach from conventional trucks. It is described as the first truly compact pickup to be sold in the U.S. in over a decade, and it uses car-like unibody construction rather than the body-on-frame layout typical of pickups. Hyundai also does not call it a pickup, preferring the term “sport adventure vehicle,” which reflects its aim to appeal to buyers who want something more rugged than a sedan or crossover SUV without moving into a traditional truck.
That positioning gives the Santa Cruz a distinctive place in the market, but it also means some capability is sacrificed. The test-drive summary notes that Hyundai did not design it to compete directly with conventional trucks, so buyers looking for a straightforward workhorse may find it less convincing. Even so, its compact size and easier-to-park character may attract truck shoppers, while its unique design and versatile features broaden its appeal beyond the usual pickup audience.
Owners’ feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for the unique design, versatile features, comfortable interior, smooth driving experience, and impressive fuel economy. At the same time, some reviewers were disappointed by the towing capacity and the price being higher than expected, which suggests the Santa Cruz is best suited to buyers who value its blend of style, practicality, and everyday usability more than maximum truck capability.

I bought it. The Santa Cruz is exactly what I wanted as a sporty, smaller truck that is still very usable and has thoughtful features. Even at 70k miles it drives like new and appears to be in great condition internally.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz earns a 4.64/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the unique design, versatile features, comfortable interior, smooth driving experience, and impressive fuel economy. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Santa Cruz’s role as a compact, car-like alternative to a conventional pickup, especially if you want something easier to park and more everyday-friendly than a traditional truck.
The market also shows 30.5% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for its comfortable interior, smooth driving experience, and versatile features. The expert assessment also highlights a crossover-like driving experience and a cabin that feels appropriate for the price range, which supports the impression of a well-sorted vehicle rather than a rough-edged first attempt.
Hyundai’s 5-year, 100,000-kilometre new-vehicle limited warranty adds some reassurance for used buyers, but you should still pay close attention to service history and overall condition because first-generation models can carry more ownership uncertainty than established nameplates.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Preferred grade uses halogen headlights, while the Ultimate adds leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, the larger touchscreen, and 20-inch alloy wheels. If you want the most complete feature set, the Ultimate is the one to compare most closely.
- Powertrain: Every Canadian Santa Cruz uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. It makes 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and the setup is tuned more for everyday drivability than serious truck duty.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane-follow assist, rear-seat reminder, driver attention warning, blind-spot monitoring and collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist. A surround-view camera system and Highway Driving Assist are available on the Ultimate grade.
- Infotainment: The standard 8-inch touchscreen includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims can add a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 10.6 litres per 100 kilometres combined, with 12.1 city and 8.6 highway.
Which 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is offered in 3 trim levels: Preferred, Preferred with the Trend Package, Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Preferred: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core Santa Cruz formula: turbocharged power, standard AWD, the 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the full standard safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and are comfortable skipping the extra convenience and tech upgrades.
- Preferred with the Trend Package: This is the best-value choice if you want a more polished daily driver without jumping all the way to the top trim. It builds on the Preferred and is the trim to focus on if you want a stronger balance of equipment and price.
- Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, adding the larger touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, 20-inch wheels, a surround-view camera system, and Highway Driving Assist. Choose this if you want the Santa Cruz to feel as premium and tech-rich as possible.
The Preferred grades use halogen headlights, while the Ultimate adds the most advanced available safety and convenience features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 105 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.84% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $30,099 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz's resale value?
The current average of $30,099 CAD sits slightly below last year's $35,763 CAD.
That price drop suggests the Santa Cruz has moved into a more buyer-friendly part of its market cycle, which can help future owners who are shopping today but may soften resale expectations later. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less depreciation risk than someone who paid closer to the higher average from a year ago. The model’s distinctive design and strong owner satisfaction should help keep it appealing to used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is a Top Safety Pick as designated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), falling short of the organization’s top rating due to the halogen headlights that are standard on the Preferred grades.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai includes a broad standard safety package with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane-follow assist, rear-seat reminder, driver attention warning, blind-spot monitoring and collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist. A surround-view camera system and Highway Driving Assist are available on the Ultimate grade.
The main caveat is that the Preferred grades miss out on the better headlight setup, so if safety equipment matters most to you, you should pay close attention to trim choice.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 stands out as Hyundai’s first compact pickup-style model, with unibody construction and a crossover-like driving character that makes it especially appealing if you want something more versatile than a sedan or crossover SUV.
The bottom line: If you want the Santa Cruz’s distinctive mix of style, comfort, and everyday usability, the 2022 is the year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a listing near the low end of the range and prioritise condition, equipment, and trim level over simply chasing the cheapest example.
