What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Essential trim is the most stripped-down version, while the N Line and Kona N add the most distinctive styling and sport-focused details. If you want more comfort and convenience, the Preferred trim can be a better fit because it opens the door to more equipment.
• Powertrain: The Essential and Preferred use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the N Line gets a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a seven-speed DCT. The Kona N uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an N eight-speed wet DCT and adds performance hardware such as launch control, an electronic limited-slip differential, and high-performance brakes and tires.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.
• Infotainment: The base model gets an 8-inch display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add SiriusXM, BlueLink, and, on the Kona N, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information. Wireless device charging is available on better-equipped versions.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption for FWD Konas, except the Kona N, is 7.4 L/100 km. AWD versions are rated at 7.9 to 8.2 L/100 km combined, while the Kona N is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, Kona N.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Kona experience with the 8-inch display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the standard safety basics. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the refreshed Kona, but it is the least feature-rich choice.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds SiriusXM satellite radio and Hyundai BlueLink, and it can be paired with the Sun & Leather Package for more comfort and driver-assistance features. If you want a more complete daily driver without jumping into sportier territory, this is the trim to focus on.
• N Line: This is the sweet spot if you want the strongest mix of value and personality. It adds the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, sportier styling, and more upscale tech possibilities, and the expert review calls it nearly unbeatable bang for the buck.
• Kona N: Choose this if you want the most performance-focused Kona. It brings the 2.0-litre turbo engine, the most aggressive hardware, and the most advanced performance features, but it is the most expensive version.

The safety package is limited on the entry trim, while more advanced driver aids are available on higher trims and packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 417 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.91% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,158 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $21,192 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,058 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a softer market than they would have a year ago. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower price point than recent owners did, which can help cushion depreciation. For a seller, the current trend points to more competition and less pricing power unless the vehicle is especially well equipped or lightly used.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona earns five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in front and side crash protection and four-star rollover resistance. It also earns a Good rating from IIHS in all six crashworthiness tests, though its child-seat anchors received a Marginal rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available technologies include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.

The main caveat is the child-seat anchor result, which kept the Kona from earning Top Safety Pick status.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.91% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings the first significant refresh, with updated styling, enhanced powertrains, and more tech and safety features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,306 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,192 CAD average.
• It offers strong styling and a value-forward trim spread.

The bottom line: If you want the refreshed look, improved powertrains, and broader tech and safety upgrades, the 2022 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you are comfortable giving up the refresh, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly route.
