What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sierra lineup spans Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. Base trims are much simpler, while higher trims add more upscale materials, larger wheels, and more premium design details.
• Powertrain: You can choose from multiple engines, including a 2.7L turbo four-cylinder, a 3.8-litre turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2L V8. The diesel and V8s use a 10-speed automatic, while the turbo-four uses an eight-speed automatic.
• Safety package: GMC Pro Safety includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate.
• Infotainment: On most grades apart from Pro, you get a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and OnStar.
• Fuel efficiency: The AT4X is rated at 18.2 L/100 km in city driving, 14.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 16.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the most basic entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Sierra’s core capability and are willing to skip the richer cabin and higher-end tech found higher up.
• SLE: This is a sensible step up if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping into the pricier luxury trims.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look while staying below the premium-focused upper trims.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel without pushing all the way into luxury pricing.
• AT4: Pick this if you want the off-road-oriented character and a more rugged setup than the mainstream trims.
• Denali: This is the trim for you if you want the Sierra’s premium identity most clearly expressed in design and cabin presentation.
• AT4X: This is the more serious off-road luxury choice, with unique suspension hardware and a more specialised setup.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury pick, and it’s the one to buy if you want the most advanced tech and the highest-end cabin experience.

Super Cruise is standard only on the Denali Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 911 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.05% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,293 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $46,293 CAD sits slightly below last year's $52,044 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the truck more appealing to used buyers today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment level rather than just model-year freshness.

Because the Sierra is positioned as a premium pickup, well-kept examples with desirable features should still attract attention. Higher-spec trims may hold interest better if they’re priced realistically against the broader market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 received mostly “Good” crash safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it earned a “Marginal” grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a “Poor” grade for headlights. Sierra 2WD models earned four-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights.

Super Cruise is a standout feature, but it is limited to the Denali Ultimate, where it comes standard. It also adds automatic lane changes and trailering capability. The Sierra also offers up to 14 camera views, a GCW Alert feature, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and updated adaptive cruise control for trailering.

The headlight result is the main caveat to keep in mind, especially if you’re comparing trims and equipment levels.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.05% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings a major makeover with more upscale design, richer tech, and new Denali Ultimate and AT4X trims.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $38,950 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $46,293 CAD average.
• It offers a familiar foundation with distinctive styling and an optional carbon-fibre composite cargo bed.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $49,320 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $46,293 CAD average.
• It pushes luxury further with the Denali Ultimate and an even broader upscale feature set.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated design, strong owner satisfaction, and broader trim choice, the 2022 is the primary target. If price matters most, the 2021 is the smarter value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the most luxurious version and can pay more.
