What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. The base Pro is the most stripped-down version, while the higher trims add more upscale materials, larger wheels, and more distinctive styling. If you want the best value, the mid-range trims are the ones to compare most carefully against your needs.
• Powertrain: You can choose from multiple engines, including a 2.7L turbo four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2L Ecotec3 V8. The diesel stands out for efficiency and towing strength, while the higher-output V8 is the most powerful option.
• Safety package: GMC Pro Safety includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, and trailering-focused features such as Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert and GCW Alert add extra capability on higher trims.
• Infotainment: Most grades apart from Pro get a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and OnStar. Higher trims can also add wireless charging, a head-up display, and a premium Bose audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates the AT4X at 18.2 L/100 km in city driving, 14.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 16.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Sierra nameplate at the lowest starting price and can live without the richer cabin and tech upgrades found higher up.
• SLE: This is the first step up for shoppers who want a more balanced everyday truck without jumping too far in price.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look while staying below the luxury-focused trims.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it adds a more premium feel without going all the way to the top-end luxury models.
• AT4: Pick this if you want the off-road-oriented character and a more rugged setup.
• Denali: This is the trim for you if you want the Sierra’s upscale identity and a more luxurious cabin.
• AT4X: This is the more serious off-road luxury choice, with premium materials and a purpose-built off-road focus.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury trim, and it is the one to buy if you want the most advanced features and the most upscale presentation.

Super Cruise is limited to the Denali Ultimate, where it is standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 917 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.42% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,170 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $47,170 CAD sits slightly below last year's $52,658 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right point in the cycle. If you pay close to the current average, you may have less room to absorb depreciation later. On the other hand, a well-equipped Sierra with the right trim and condition should still appeal to buyers who want a premium full-size pickup.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 received mostly Good crash safety ratings from IIHS, but it earned a Marginal grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a Poor grade for headlights. It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, and trailering-specific features such as Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert and GCW Alert add useful protection when towing.

The main caveat is the weaker headlight result, which is worth keeping in mind if you often drive at night.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 brings a major makeover with more upscale tech, a richer cabin, and new Denali Ultimate and AT4X trims.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $39,683 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $47,170 CAD average.
• It offers a familiar foundation with distinctive styling and unique features.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $49,962 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $47,170 CAD average.
• It pushes Sierra luxury further with an even more upscale Denali Ultimate focus.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the redesigned Sierra with stronger tech, more luxury, and broader trim choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path; if you want to spend more for the latest luxury emphasis, the 2023 is the step up to consider.
