What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Elevation Standard is the most stripped-down version, with a 7-inch colour touchscreen and no advanced driver aids, while higher trims add more premium materials and equipment. The Denali stands out with a chrome grille, 20-inch wheels, leather seating, navigation, and a Bose premium audio system.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 3.6-litre V6, or a 2.8-litre Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder. The base engine is described as adequate but uninspiring, while the V6 is the stronger all-round choice and the diesel is noted for robust towing and fuel efficiency.
• Safety package: The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance. It is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, but rear park assist is only available on models equipped with leather seats.
• Infotainment: The Elevation Standard gets a 7-inch colour touchscreen, while the Elevation upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth streaming audio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Denali adds navigation and a high-definition rearview camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-litre four-cylinder returns combined city/highway fuel consumption of 10.9 L/100 km, or 11.4 L/100 km with 4WD. The turbodiesel achieves 10.1 L/100 km combined in RWD form and 10.5 L/100 km with 4WD, while the V6 gets 11.3 L/100 km combined in RWD and 12.1 L/100 km with 4WD.

Which 2022 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Canyon’s basic utility and premium feel at the lowest starting price. It gives you the 7-inch touchscreen and core convenience features, but it is the least equipped trim and lacks advanced driver aids.
• Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while staying below the off-road and luxury trims. If you want a more complete daily-driver setup without stretching too far up the range, this is the one to focus on.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the more rugged, off-road-oriented character, along with premium touches like leather seating, unique styling, and the standard off-road hardware described in the test notes. It suits buyers who want capability and a tougher look without going all the way to Denali luxury.
• Denali: This is the upscale pick, with the most premium appearance and equipment, including navigation, a high-definition rearview camera, and the Driver Alert package as standard. It is the right choice if you want the most luxurious Canyon experience.

The safety package is thin on the base trim, and the Driver Alert package becomes more relevant as you move up the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 120 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.71% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $37,048 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $37,091 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,632 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the truck more attractive to buyers today but less favourable for sellers trying to maximise return. If you own one, pricing competitively will matter more than it did a year ago. Stronger trims and well-kept examples should still hold attention, especially if they have desirable equipment and a clean history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2022 GMC Canyon earns four-star ratings for frontal crash protection and rollover resistance, five-star ratings for side protection, and four stars overall from NHTSA.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon’s standard safety equipment is thin on the base trim, which does not include advanced driver aids. The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance, and it is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali. Rear park assist is only available on models equipped with leather seats.

The main caveats are the Poor IIHS result for the front passenger-side small overlap test structure and safety cage, the Poor headlight rating, and the Basic rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention. It also received a Marginal rating for its LATCH child-seat anchors.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package to Elevation Premium.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $35,002 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,091 CAD average.
• It adds a freshened face and a new AT4 trim.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $47,920 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $37,091 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned next-generation layout with more upscale tech and added off-road ambition.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the familiar Canyon formula with strong owner satisfaction and softer pricing. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the value play; if you want the newest design and more premium tech, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
