Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, responsive handling, and low road noise, while also highlighting its strong interior quality. The expert assessment reinforces that impression by describing the Canyon as solid and steady, with capability that covers most buyers’ needs. The available diesel and V6 powertrains also add to its long-term usefulness if you want a truck that can handle regular work and weekend driving. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about choosing the right trim and equipment level for the features you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Elevation Standard is the most stripped-down version, while the Denali brings the most premium look and feel with features like a unique chrome grille, 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated leather seats, open-pore Ash wood trim, and a Bose audio system. The AT4 adds rugged styling and a more upscale cabin than the lower trims, while the Elevation sits in the middle with more typical GM materials.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 3.6-litre V6, or a 2.8-litre Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder. The V6 and diesel are the stronger choices if you want more capability, and 4WD is available on all trims.
• Safety package: The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance. It is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, but rear park assist is only available on models equipped with leather seats.
• Infotainment: The Elevation Standard gets a 7-inch colour touchscreen, while the Elevation upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth streaming audio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Denali adds navigation and a high-definition rearview camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-litre four-cylinder returns 10.9 L/100 km combined, or 11.4 L/100 km combined with 4WD. The turbodiesel achieves 10.1 L/100 km combined, or 10.5 L/100 km combined with 4WD. The V6 returns 11.3 L/100 km combined, or 12.1 L/100 km combined with 4WD.

Which 2022 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Canyon’s core utility at the lowest price. You get the basics, but not much in the way of advanced tech or driver aids.
• Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth streaming audio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto without jumping all the way to the premium trims.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the more rugged look and off-road-oriented hardware, plus a more premium cabin than the lower trims. It suits buyers who want a truck that feels more adventurous without going all the way to Denali luxury.
• Denali: This is the luxury pick, with the most upscale appearance and the richest feature set, including the premium audio and the available driver-assistance package becoming standard.

The Driver Alert package is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, but rear park assist requires leather seats.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 112 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.22% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $37,069 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $37,143 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,914 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Canyon is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar immediately. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The truck’s premium image and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time, especially for well-equipped trims.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2022 GMC Canyon earns four-star ratings in frontal crash protection and rollover resistance, and five-star ratings in side protection from NHTSA.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon comes with tire-fill alert and the Teen Driver system on the base trim, and the Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance. That package is available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, though rear park assist is only available on models equipped with leather seats. The main safety shortcoming is the lack of advanced features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and lane-keeping or lane-centring assistance. IIHS testing also flagged weak points, including a Poor result for the front passenger-side small overlap structure and safety cage, plus Poor headlights and a Marginal LATCH rating.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a new Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package to Elevation Premium.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $34,323 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,143 CAD average.
• It offers refreshed styling and a new AT4 trim.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $48,466 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $37,143 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned next-generation platform with more upscale tech and added off-road ambition.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best fit if you want the current-generation Canyon’s premium feel, broad trim range, and softer pricing than newer models. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want the newest design and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
