What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup stretches from a value-oriented base model to the Platinum, with ST-Line and Timberline broadening the range for 2022. Lower trims can feel more basic in materials and equipment, while higher trims add more polish and features.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder, a hybrid based on a 3.3-litre V6, or a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6. The hybrid is the efficiency-minded choice, while the V6 brings the most power and towing capacity.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: You’ll find Sync 3 with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Higher trims can add wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-litre engine uses between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km in combined driving, the hybrid can use as little as 9.6 L/100 km, and the twin-turbo V6 is rated at 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 6 trim levels: XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point for the 2.3-litre turbo-four and gives you the core Explorer formula without stepping too far up the price ladder. It makes sense if you want the basics and plan to add only the options you truly need.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT-based formula, making it a good fit if you want a more aggressive appearance without moving into the full performance-oriented ST.
• Timberline: This is the rugged choice in the lineup, with extra ground clearance and improved approach, breakover, and departure angles. It suits you best if you want the Explorer’s family utility with a more adventurous edge.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the hybrid powertrain, since it combines stronger efficiency with a more complete equipment mix. It’s the smart pick for shoppers who want a balanced daily driver.
• ST: Choose this if you want the most performance-focused Explorer, with the twin-turbo V6 and available ST Street package that adds black 21-inch wheels, performance brakes, and red brake calipers.
• Platinum: This is the luxury-oriented choice, with the twin-turbo V6 and additional premium tech such as the 12.3-inch digital instrument display and available Active Park Assist 2.0.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds more advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully and wait for the right example.

• Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 517 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.37% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,780 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $34,780 CAD sits slightly below last year's $40,148 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Explorer has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If prices continue to settle, resale values could remain under pressure unless demand strengthens or inventory tightens. On the other hand, the model’s broad appeal and family-friendly reputation should help support interest from shoppers looking for a versatile three-row SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2022 Explorer earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights. If you move up to Co-Pilot360 Assist+, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist. The main caveat is that NHTSA has not published complete crash-test ratings for this model year.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.37% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Ford added ST-Line and Timberline trim levels for 2022, broadening the lineup’s appeal.

The bottom line: If you want a well-rounded three-row SUV with strong owner satisfaction, broad trim coverage, and a softer used-market price than last year, the 2022 Explorer is the better path. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the lower end of the range and focus on listings that combine the equipment you want with the strongest deal status.
