Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as Volkswagen’s best-selling model, and its appeal is easy to understand. It offers room for five people, available all-wheel drive, and more cargo than any family car, which makes it a practical choice for a wide range of buyers. It also earns praise for plenty of cargo space, spaciousness, and easy-to-use technology.
That practicality is a major part of the Tiguan’s identity, especially for shoppers looking for a compact SUV that can handle everyday family duties. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the stereo is lacking, and the interior materials feel cheap. Even so, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan remains distinctive for combining useful space and straightforward technology in a package that clearly resonates with buyers.

We bought this vehicle for our daughter. It is loaded inside and out. She and I did our research on the VW Tiguan. It is technically on par with every high in car on the market. The panoramic sunroof was a must have for her. Our daughter took the test herself. The ease of handling, acceleration and braking were excellent. Before we returned to the dealership we knew this was the right vehicle for her!

Solid SUV - big enough for family, small enough to get decent gas mileage for an AWD. Base model comes with enough features to leave the competition out of the game for similar SUVs.

Despite the what I read about the sluggishness of this model, its STILL a VW (a little speed demon once it gets going). I love all the features of my car (Panoramic sunroof, car play, LCD odometer area, heated seats). I believe I got GREAT VALUE out of this car! No complaints!!!!

| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,702 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.16% |

There are 3,272 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $17,503.34, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the Tiguan for its comfort, practicality, spacious interior, and family-friendly usefulness. The review summary also points to good fuel economy and a solid fit for families, which lines up with its easy-to-live-with character.
The trade-offs are familiar: some owners call out sluggish performance, and the cabin can feel less polished than you might expect. In context, this is a compact SUV aimed at shoppers who want space, straightforward tech, and everyday versatility more than excitement.
The market backs that up, with 33.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to a dependable, family-friendly ownership experience, with drivers highlighting comfort, practicality, and a vehicle they feel good about living with over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability with a strong value-oriented ownership package and a powertrain that is built for everyday use rather than complexity.
Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage adds free scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, plus roadside assistance and warranty coverage, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently and used gently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a vehicle-specific record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on cabin condition, electronics, and how the SUV drives in stop-and-go traffic, since that’s where everyday issues are easiest to notice.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, and SEL trims are the core lineup, while SE R-Line Black and SEL Premium R-Line add sportier design and equipment. The base setup is more basic, and the higher trims bring more comfort and tech.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on most models.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and front and rear parking sensors are not on S and SE.
- Infotainment: MIB3 starts with SE and brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faster response times, WiFi for up to four devices, and connected services. The SEL Premium R-Line adds a nine-speaker Fender audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Tiguan returns 25 mpg in combined driving with front-wheel drive and 24 mpg with all-wheel drive. During testing, the AWD model averaged 22.6 mpg.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Tiguan’s space and core safety features at the lowest price. It gives you the basic family-SUV formula, but you give up some of the nicer tech and convenience upgrades found higher up.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adaptive cruise control. If you want the Tiguan to feel modern without stretching too far on price, this is the trim to target.
- SEL: This trim adds lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit. It suits you if you want a more complete safety and convenience package.
- SE R-Line Black: This version adds sporty R-Line design and equipment upgrades, so it’s mainly for shoppers who want a more distinctive look.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, with standard 4Motion AWD, automatic high-beam headlights, a surround-view camera, and the nine-speaker Fender audio system. It’s the right pick if you want the most features and don’t mind paying for them.
For safety-minded shoppers, note that the Top Safety Pick rating applies to SEL and SEL Premium R-Line specification thanks to their standard LED headlights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,272 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 79.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,503.34, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $17,504 sits slightly below last year's $19,702.
That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop near the lower end of the range, you reduce the risk of being upside down later. Strong demand for practical, family-friendly SUVs should also help keep resale interest steady.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2021 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS in SEL and SEL Premium R-Line specification.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and front and rear parking sensors are not included on S and SE. The SEL Premium R-Line adds automatic high-beam headlights and a surround-view camera.
One caveat is that the adaptive cruise control can be slow to recognize a vehicle cutting into the gap ahead, and the lane-keep system can be inconsistent in its warnings and response. If safety is a top priority, the higher trims are the ones that unlock the strongest package.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines roomy packaging with easy-to-use tech and strong everyday practicality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $16,067, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,504 average.
- It emphasizes three-row seating and extra passenger space.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,613, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,504 average.
- It adds a light refresh and new safety technology.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around choice if you want the Tiguan’s space, tech, and safety at a softened market price. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the value play; if you want the newer safety update and can spend more, the 2022 is worth a look.
