What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base truck is simpler, with a 7-inch touchscreen and fewer convenience features, while higher trims add an 8-inch screen and more equipment. The TRD Pro stands out with model-specific styling, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and a more off-road-focused setup.
• Powertrain: All Canadian Tacomas use a 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, plus standard four-wheel drive. You can choose a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, and the truck’s efficiency varies by transmission and off-road configuration.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Headlight performance varies by trim level.
• Infotainment: The base model gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch unit. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth are standard, and SiriusXM is included on every trim except the base model.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the automatic 4WD V6 at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 on the highway, and 11.8 combined. The manual rises to 13.8, 11.4, and 12.7, and TRD Off Road and TRD Pro versions go to 13.8/11.7/12.9.

Which 2021 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness and standard safety without paying for extra equipment. It is the trim to consider if you mainly want the truck’s reliability, standard four-wheel drive, and straightforward utility.
• TRD Sport: This is the better-value step-up if you want more equipment and a more polished daily experience than the base truck. It suits you if you want the Tacoma formula with a bit more comfort and convenience.
• TRD Sport Premium: Choose this if you want the Sport’s equipment with a more upscale feel and more features. It is the right middle ground if you want a better-equipped Tacoma without going all the way to the off-road models.
• TRD Off Road: This is the best-value trim for buyers who actually plan to use the Tacoma’s off-road hardware. It adds the locking rear differential, upgraded suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
• TRD Off Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road hardware plus more comfort and convenience. It is the better choice if you split your time between trail use and everyday driving.
• TRD Pro: This is the most off-road-focused Tacoma, with Fox internal-bypass shocks, a 1-inch front lift, retuned rear suspension, and a front skid plate. It makes sense if off-road capability matters more to you than ride comfort or value.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, but headlight ratings vary by trim level.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 224 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.11% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $42,677 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $42,833 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,621 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour now, but it also means future sellers may not see the same peak values that were available a year ago. Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and durability should help it stay attractive to used buyers. Its strong owner satisfaction rating also supports demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab earns Good IIHS crash-test scores in most tests, with an Acceptable result in the passenger-side small overlap front test, and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA with four-star frontal and rollover ratings and five-star side ratings.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. That is a solid standard safety package for a truck. The main caveat is that headlight performance varies by trim level, and the passenger-side small overlap result is weaker than the Tacoma’s other crash-test scores.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Nightshade Edition, Trail Special Edition, and standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,041 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $42,833 CAD average.
• It adds useful updates while keeping the Tacoma’s rugged, dependable character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,794 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $42,833 CAD average.
• It keeps the Tacoma appealing with modern tech, safety, and strong off-road ability.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the right pick if you want the current-year Tacoma at a softer price and with enough freshening to stay relevant. If you are price-sensitive, the 2020 is the smarter value play; if you want to spend a bit more for the next model year, the 2022 is the natural alternative.
