How much does the 2021 Toyota Tacoma cost?

Prices have softened 6.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 226 listings available, which suggests you still have a workable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise its value, reliability, and resale potential, while also highlighting its features, performance, and durability. That lines up with the Tacoma’s role as a midsize pickup that leans into toughness and versatility, especially if you want a truck for work, hauling, or off-road use rather than a polished daily driver. The market also shows 27.4% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to the Tacoma’s reliability, dependability, and trouble-free ownership reputation, along with its strong long-term appeal and ability to be a truck you can count on. The expert notes also reinforce that theme by describing the Tacoma as having an excellent reputation for reliability. Toyota’s warranty coverage and roadside assistance add some ownership reassurance, and the truck’s reputation for durability is a major reason many buyers keep coming back to it.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about living with a truck that can feel dated, noisy, and less refined than newer rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s trim walk matters because the base model is much more basic than the higher trims. The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims move to an 8-inch unit, and SiriusXM satellite radio is not included on the base model. Higher trims also add more distinctive styling and equipment, so you should make sure the truck you’re considering has the features you actually want.
• Powertrain: Every Canadian Tacoma uses a 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The part-time 4WD system includes low range, and fuel-efficiency figures vary by transmission and off-road configuration.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. That’s a strong standard suite, but you should still check whether the truck’s trim and equipment match your expectations for driver assistance.
• Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trims get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth are standard, and the system is functional rather than flashy. If you want more audio punch, a seven-speaker JBL system with a subwoofer is available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the 4WD V6 automatic at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 on the highway, and 11.8 combined. With the manual, those figures rise to 13.8, 11.4, and 12.7, and TRD Off Road and TRD Pro versions are rated at 13.8/11.7/12.9. In mixed driving, the test vehicle averaged 14.0 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness and standard V6/4WD setup without paying for extra equipment. It’s the trim to consider if you value the truck’s fundamentals more than convenience features.
• TRD Sport: This is the better-value step up if you want a more equipped Tacoma without jumping straight into the pricier off-road-focused models. It adds more content while keeping the Tacoma’s everyday usability intact.
• TRD Sport Premium: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling version of the Sport trim and are willing to pay for extra comfort and convenience.
• TRD Off Road: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the hardware that suits the Tacoma’s personality best, including the locking rear differential, upgraded suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
• TRD Off Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road hardware of the TRD Off Road with more equipment and a more complete feature set.
• TRD Pro: This is the most off-road focused Tacoma, with Fox internal-bypass shocks, a 1-inch front lift, retuned rear suspension with progressive-rate leaf springs, and a front skid plate. It suits you best if off-road capability is your top priority.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting huge discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 226 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.22% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $42,684 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $42,872 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,714 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Tacoma has softened enough to improve your entry point as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may face a more competitive market than a year ago. If prices stay near today’s level, resale values should remain supported by the Tacoma’s strong reputation and steady demand. The truck’s broad appeal, especially among buyers who value durability and off-road capability, helps cushion depreciation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab earns Good scores in all IIHS crash tests except the passenger-side small overlap front test, where it received an Acceptable score, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The Tacoma also earned the IIHS’s highest Superior rating for front-crash prevention tech. One caveat is that headlight performance varies by trim level, with some ratings falling to Marginal.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds new special editions and standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,170 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $42,872 CAD average.
• It offers minor updates plus useful design and technology improvements.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,633 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $42,872 CAD average.
• It adds modern tech and safety features while staying practical for commuting and weekend use.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, satisfaction, and current-market availability, the 2021 is the sensible default. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2020 is the cheaper route into the same rugged Tacoma formula, while the 2022 makes sense if you want to spend a bit more for a newer-feeling package.
