What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and XSE add sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, a matching diffuser panel, a subtle body kit, a twin-outlet exhaust, and attractive 18-inch wheels, while the XSE also gets standard 18-inch wheels and a more upscale cabin. The base-oriented L, LE, and XLE are the more anonymous choices, and the SE is the best-value trim if you want the sportier look without stepping all the way up.
• Powertrain: The SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Dynamic Shift CVT, paddle shifters, and a Sport driving mode. The SE can also be had with a six-speed manual transmission, which is the enthusiast-friendly choice.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are standard this year, and the available blind-spot warning system gains rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are standard, along with an 8-inch touchscreen in the SE. The XSE adds Service Connect, Safety Connect, Remote Connect with remote engine start, a Guest Driver function, and vehicle-finder capability, plus SiriusXM, navigation, and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla XSE should use 7.0 L/100 km in combined driving, with 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway. The review’s test route returned 7.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest choice if you want the Corolla name at the lowest entry point and do not need the sportier styling or extra equipment.
• LE: This is the sensible mainstream pick if you want a well-rounded Corolla without paying for the sport-focused trims.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented Corolla with a more upscale feel than the lower trims.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the sportier look and the more engaging 2.0-litre powertrain while staying below the XSE.
• XSE: Pick this if you want the most polished Corolla sedan experience, with the richest feature set and the most upscale presentation among the standard trims.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, and the available blind-spot warning system gains rear cross-traffic alert.

The Corolla’s reputation for reliability and efficiency should continue to support interest from used-car shoppers. Its broad appeal as a practical compact car also helps keep it relevant in the resale market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2021 Corolla’s safety ratings were not yet finalised in the provided data, but it does come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 as standard.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

Choose the 2021 if:

• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.07% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 adds Android Auto as standard and brings rear side-impact airbags to the Corolla.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,791 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $21,103 CAD average.
• It adds style and a bit of thrill to the Corolla’s familiar practical mission.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,306 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,103 CAD average.
• It mainly adds two new colours while keeping the Corolla’s core strengths intact.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and satisfaction, the 2021 is the smart default. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want to spend a bit more for a newer model year, the 2022 is the straightforward step up.
