How much does the 2021 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.77/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its rugged durability, spacious interior, off-road capability, and useful technologies like adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay. That lines up with the 4Runner’s core appeal: it is built for buyers who want utility, a rugged image, and go-anywhere capability more than polished everyday manners.

The market also shows 41.8% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance of finding value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to rugged durability, reliability, and a vehicle that feels like a solid long-term investment. The expert notes also describe it as dependable and even “indestructible” in hard use, which reinforces its reputation for being easy to count on over time.

Toyota’s own commentary also frames the 4Runner as a vehicle you can keep for the long haul, but you should still expect ownership trade-offs tied to age and fuel use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail trim is the entry point and comes with black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, all-season floor mats, and no heated front seats. It also has a more basic, old-school cabin, so you should check whether the features you want are missing at this level.
• Powertrain: Every 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned more for durability and off-road use than quick on-road response.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, five USB ports, and a year of Safety Connect. Some packages add dynamic navigation and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it uses 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test average was 14.0 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: Trail and SR5.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry trim, and it is the one to focus on if you want the most straightforward 4Runner experience. It gets the basic rugged setup, black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and the standard off-road hardware that fits the model’s mission. It is the best-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s core capability without paying for extra packages.
• SR5: This is the trim to consider if you want more flexibility, since it can be paired with several packages in Canada, including TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro. Those packages add more specialised equipment and broader feature content, so this is the better path if you want to tailor the 4Runner more closely to your needs.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

It looks like a buyer-friendly time to shop, especially if you are patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 41.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 134 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.13% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,739 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $46,739 CAD sits slightly below last year's $52,004 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside for a future seller. If you buy at the current average, you are starting from a lower baseline than last year’s shoppers faced.

Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and strong demand from the right kind of buyer should help it hold interest better than many mainstream SUVs. Its rugged image and loyal following are part of what supports long-term resale strength.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a Marginal rating from IIHS for small overlap frontal-impact protection, and a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA. It also earns a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash from NHTSA.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. However, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not included.

The main safety caveat is that the crash-test results reflect the 4Runner’s age, and the missing blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features are notable omissions.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 41.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Despite its age, it remains appealing for reliability, resale value, and rugged go-anywhere capability.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $44,783 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $46,739 CAD average.
• It is a rugged, capability-first SUV with strong off-road focus.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,535 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $46,739 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged formula while feeling more current with modern infotainment and safety tech.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the right pick if you want the strongest balance of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and the 4Runner’s classic rugged character. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want a slightly newer-feeling version and can spend more, the 2022 is worth a look.
