Why it stands out
The 2021 Nissan Rogue stands out as a strong value in its segment, and that value helped make it a Canadian award winner as judged by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. Redesigned from the top down for the 2021 model year, it brings a wide range of improvements, including a new engine, fresh exterior and interior design, and an entirely new platform and chassis. One of its key strengths is that these upgrades are not limited to the top trim, so buyers across the range benefit from the redesign.
That broad improvement makes the 2021 Nissan Rogue appealing to shoppers who want a modern, well-rounded compact SUV without having to move up the trim ladder for the main benefits. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its smooth and refined ride, roomy interior, attractive design, and overall value. The main drawback noted by some drivers is that they would like more power and additional storage space in the front area.

For the amount features you get with this car for the price, it’s absolutely amazing. I would only wish that the lip of leather that sticks out in between the screen and middle vents wasn’t there because I feel like it blocks the airflow just a bit. And even then, I love everything else so much that that isn’t too big of a deal. The sun and moonroof is gorgeous, the leather interior and overall space is to die for, and it drive so smooth. Would definitely recommend.

I think the Rogue is an outstanding value…great size/plenty of room and safety features/good gas mileage and quality materials. My Rogue is missing Navigation and a cargo cover. I’d compare my Rogue to a RAV4 or Subaru Outback.

We have had a few Rogues in my family over the years and have never had any issues. The simple key is to keep up with maintenance schedule and not to be heavy footed. This purchase was a 2021 because it has the same 2.5 motor.- not sure yet to the new 3 liter with a turbo. 2021 is sleeker with a more firm drive. I also was looking at Mazda cx-5 for also being a sound 2.5 liter with quality reputation and great price point.

There are 581 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Nissan Rogue earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth and refined ride, roomy interior, attractive design, and strong value for the price. That lines up well with its role as a modern, well-rounded compact SUV, especially if you want broad improvements without needing to move up to the top trim. The market also shows 28.4% of listings as good or great deals, which supports its appeal for value-focused shoppers.
Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Rogue’s smooth ride, value, and overall day-to-day usability. The expert evaluation also describes the new Rogue as a well-rounded redesign with improvements that benefit the whole range, which supports confidence in how it should hold up over time. Nissan’s three-year, 60,000-kilometre basic warranty and five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty also help reduce early ownership risk for used buyers.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Rogue?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The redesign brings meaningful upgrades across the range, not just on the top trim, so even lower trims benefit from the new platform, fresh styling, and improved ride quality. The base setup is more basic on features, while higher trims add more premium equipment and materials.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. There is no alternate powertrain offered, so every version uses the same basic mechanical setup.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every Rogue, and it includes forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, high beam assist, forward collision warning, and a driver alertness feature. ProPILOT Assist is added on the SV, and the Platinum adds Navi-link functionality.
- Infotainment: Most models use an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, hands-free text messaging, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The SV adds an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, more USB ports, and NissanConnect services, while the Platinum upgrades to a 9-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the front-wheel-drive Rogue uses 8.1 L/100 km combined, while all-wheel drive uses 8.3 L/100 km combined.
Which 2021 Nissan Rogue trim should I buy?
The 2021 Nissan Rogue is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it still gets the redesigned Rogue’s core strengths, including the new platform, standard Safety Shield 360, and the 8-inch touchscreen. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the new-generation Rogue.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like the Wi-Fi hotspot, extra USB ports, NissanConnect services, and ProPILOT Assist. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
- Platinum: This is the most premium version, with the 9-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, head-up display, and the Bose 10-speaker audio system. It suits you if you want the most technology and comfort features in the range.
Safety Shield 360 is standard across the lineup, while ProPILOT Assist starts on the SV and Navi-link is added on the Platinum.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan Rogue?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and some pricing softness to create opportunities if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 581 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.47% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,525 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Nissan Rogue's resale value?
The current average of $21,532 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,779 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Rogue has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be helpful if you buy now and plan to sell later. A lower entry price can improve your odds of limiting further loss, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim that remains desirable on the used market. Strong demand for value-oriented compact SUVs should also help support resale interest.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue safe?
The 2021 Nissan Rogue earns Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with earlier examples scoring three-star ratings in frontal crash testing before later versions were upgraded to four-star.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every Rogue, and it includes forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, high beam assist, forward collision warning, and a driver alertness feature. ProPILOT Assist is added on the SV, and the Platinum’s Navi-link version can assist with steering and slowing through curves. The main caveat is that earlier examples had weaker frontal crash results before Nissan’s updates.
Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Rogue or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign brings a new engine, new platform, and broader improvements across the range.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $18,036 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $21,532 CAD average.
- It offers a dated but still practical compact crossover with strong comfort and cargo appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,347 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,532 CAD average.
- It adds a new turbocharged engine and stronger fuel efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, modernisation, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the strongest all-around choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 can still make sense, while the 2022 is the better path if you want the newer powertrain and can stretch your budget.
