Why it stands out
The 2021 Nissan Rogue stands out as a strong value in its segment, and that value helped make it a Canadian award winner as judged by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. Redesigned from the top down for the 2021 model year, it brings a wide range of improvements, including a new engine, fresh exterior and interior design, and an entirely new platform and chassis. One of its key strengths is that these upgrades are not limited to the top trim, so buyers across the range benefit from the redesign.
That broad improvement makes the 2021 Nissan Rogue appealing to shoppers who want a modern, well-rounded compact SUV without having to move up the trim ladder for the main benefits. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its smooth and refined ride, roomy interior, attractive design, and overall value. The main drawback noted by some drivers is that they would like more power and additional storage space in the front area.

For the amount features you get with this car for the price, it’s absolutely amazing. I would only wish that the lip of leather that sticks out in between the screen and middle vents wasn’t there because I feel like it blocks the airflow just a bit. And even then, I love everything else so much that that isn’t too big of a deal. The sun and moonroof is gorgeous, the leather interior and overall space is to die for, and it drive so smooth. Would definitely recommend.

I think the Rogue is an outstanding value…great size/plenty of room and safety features/good gas mileage and quality materials. My Rogue is missing Navigation and a cargo cover. I’d compare my Rogue to a RAV4 or Subaru Outback.

We have had a few Rogues in my family over the years and have never had any issues. The simple key is to keep up with maintenance schedule and not to be heavy footed. This purchase was a 2021 because it has the same 2.5 motor.- not sure yet to the new 3 liter with a turbo. 2021 is sleeker with a more firm drive. I also was looking at Mazda cx-5 for also being a sound 2.5 liter with quality reputation and great price point.

Prices have softened 16.02% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 566 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Nissan Rogue earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth and refined ride, roomy interior, attractive design, and strong value. That lines up well with its use-case as a modern, well-rounded compact SUV that gives you the main redesign benefits across the range, not just in the top trim. The market also shows 31.4% of listings as good or great deals, which supports its appeal if you want a well-equipped used SUV without stretching too far upmarket.
Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with many drivers saying they can count on its smooth ride and overall value. The expert evaluation also supports that impression by describing the Rogue as a well-rounded redesign with improved refinement and stability. Nissan’s warranty coverage adds some reassurance for used buyers, but you should still check service records carefully because long-term ownership risk always depends on maintenance history and how the vehicle was used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Rogue?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The redesign benefits are spread across the range, but lower trims miss some of the premium touches found higher up. You should compare upholstery, lighting, and convenience equipment carefully so you do not assume every Rogue feels equally upscale.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. There is no alternate powertrain, so you should decide whether the standard output is enough for your driving needs.
- Safety package: Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard and includes forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, high beam assist, forward collision warning, and a driver alertness feature. ProPILOT Assist is added on the SV, and the Platinum adds Navi-link functionality.
- Infotainment: Most models use an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, hands-free text messaging, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Platinum upgrades to a 9-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless charging, but wireless Android Auto is not available.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Rogue uses 8.9 L/100 km city, 7.0 L/100 km highway, and 8.1 L/100 km combined in front-wheel drive form, or 9.2 L/100 km city, 7.2 L/100 km highway, and 8.3 L/100 km combined with all-wheel drive.
Which 2021 Nissan Rogue trim should I buy?
The 2021 Nissan Rogue is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the redesigned Rogue’s core strengths without paying for extras you may not need. It gives you the new platform, standard safety suite, and the basic infotainment setup, making it the best fit if you care most about price and the fundamentals.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds meaningful everyday upgrades, including available all-wheel drive, more USB ports, in-car Wi-Fi hotspot access, NissanConnect services, and ProPILOT Assist. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
- Platinum: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale Rogue experience, with standard all-wheel drive, a larger 9-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, a head-up display, and the Bose 10-speaker audio system. It suits you best if you want the most technology and comfort features in the lineup.
Safety Shield 360 is standard on every trim, while ProPILOT Assist starts on the SV and adds more highway-driving support on the Platinum with Navi-link.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan Rogue?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 566 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.02% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,525 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Nissan Rogue's resale value?
The current average of $21,587 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,705 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can be helpful if you are buying now but less favourable if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the current softness means you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if similar listings remain plentiful. On the other hand, the Rogue’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue safe?
The 2021 Nissan Rogue earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with earlier examples scoring three-star ratings in frontal crash testing before later versions were upgraded to four-star ratings.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every Rogue and includes forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, high beam assist, forward collision warning, and a driver alertness feature. ProPILOT Assist is added on the SV, and the Platinum’s Navi-link version can assist with steering and slowing through curves. The main caveat is that early-release versions had weaker frontal crash results before Nissan’s adjustments.
Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Rogue or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign brings a new engine, new platform, and broad improvements across the range.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $18,057 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $21,587 CAD average.
- It is older and more dated, but still appeals if you value comfort and everyday practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $23,320 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,587 CAD average.
- It adds a newer turbocharged engine and improved fuel efficiency.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around choice if you want the redesigned Rogue’s modern hardware, strong safety, and broad value. If your priority is saving money above all else, the 2020 can still make sense, while the 2022 is worth a look if you want the newer powertrain and can stretch your budget.
