Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks reliable?

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S is the most basic version, while the SV and SR add more comfort and convenience equipment. The SR Premium brings the most upscale feel with features such as LED headlights, LED fog lights, black heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, a rear roof-mounted spoiler, dark chrome grille accents, a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel and shift knob, Prima-Tex-appointed seating, the Bose Personal Plus sound system, and a surround-view monitor.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 Kicks uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, paired with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT and front-wheel drive. There is no all-wheel drive option, and the CVT can get noisy under heavy acceleration or when climbing hills.
• Safety package: Every model gets Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. Cruise control is standard, and the SV and SR add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.
• Infotainment: The base S includes a 7-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, three USB ports, keyless entry, push-button start, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. The SV adds Nissan Intelligent Key, automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, and a USB-C port. The SR Premium adds the Bose Personal Plus sound system and a surround-view monitor.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the Kicks at 7.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 on the highway, and 7.2 combined.

Which 2021 Nissan Kicks trim should I buy?

The 2021 Nissan Kicks is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SR Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and are comfortable with the most basic equipment. You still get the core safety suite, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the same powertrain as every other trim.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades such as automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, a USB-C port, and more driver-assistance equipment without jumping to the top price tier.
• SR: This trim adds a more polished look and feel with 17-inch aluminium-alloy wheels, rear disc brakes, and a fuller interior treatment, making it a good middle ground if you want more substance than the S without going all the way to the top.
• SR Premium: This is the choice if you want the most features, including the Bose Personal Plus sound system, surround-view monitor, Prima-Tex-appointed seating, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and the most upscale exterior details.

Every trim comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, and the SV and SR add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 265 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.49% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,427 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Nissan Kicks's resale value?

The current average of $17,427 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,913 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you buy now, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. The current market suggests the Kicks is still accessible, yet not immune to broader price pressure.

Because the model is positioned as a value-focused crossover, resale strength will likely depend on how well it continues to appeal to shoppers who prioritise affordability, efficiency, and equipment over performance. A well-kept example with the right trim and features should remain easier to move than a stripped or poorly presented one.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks safe?

The 2021 Kicks has not been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2021 Kicks a four-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2021 Kicks comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. Cruise control is also standard, and every model gets 10 airbags.

A key caveat is that the Kicks has no IIHS crash-test result for this model year, so you should lean more heavily on its standard safety equipment and NHTSA rating when evaluating it.

Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Kicks or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings a refreshed look and more features while keeping the same easygoing, value-focused character.

The bottom line: If you want the freshest version of this first-generation Kicks with more equipment and a still-accessible used price, the 2021 is the one to target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, a nearby year may be worth considering, but you should expect fewer of the refresh-era upgrades.

How does the 2021 Nissan Kicks compare to the 2021 Mazda CX-30?

The Kicks is the more affordable, efficiency-focused choice, while the CX-30 brings more power and a higher starting price.
