Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks reliable?

The 2021 Kicks is presented as a practical, value-focused crossover that keeps its basic mission intact while adding more features. Its expert assessment also points to strong cost effectiveness and safety, which supports the case for dependable everyday use. The performance notes describe a modest but adequate powertrain, with enough power for its size and a CVT that can get noisy under heavy acceleration, but not enough to push the Kicks out of consideration.

The model’s strong value focus and solid feature set suggest manageable ownership risk for used buyers, especially if you want a simple daily driver rather than a performance-oriented SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Kicks S is the most stripped-down version, while the SV and SR add a fuller centre console armrest, more premium interior materials, and a more upscale feel. The SR Premium stands out with LED headlights, LED fog lights, black heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, a rear roof-mounted spoiler, dark chrome grille accents, Prima-Tex-appointed seating, and a sportier appearance.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 Kicks uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, paired with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT and front-wheel drive. There is no all-wheel drive option, and the Kicks is tuned for everyday use rather than quick acceleration.
• Safety package: Every model gets Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. SV and SR trims add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.
• Infotainment: The base Kicks S has a 7-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, three USB ports, keyless entry, push-button start, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. The SV adds Nissan Intelligent Key, automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, and a USB-C port. The SR Premium adds the Bose Personal Plus sound system and a surround-view monitor.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the Kicks at 7.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 on the highway, and 7.2 combined.

Which 2021 Nissan Kicks trim should I buy?

The 2021 Nissan Kicks is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SR, and SR Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and are happy with the essentials. You still get the 7-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, keyless entry, push-button start, and Nissan Safety Shield 360, but it is the most basic version and uses rear drum brakes.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, Nissan Intelligent Key, a USB-C port, rear disc brakes, and more comfort without jumping all the way to the top model.
• SR: This trim adds a more upscale look and feel, including LED headlights, LED fog lights, black heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, a rear spoiler, dark chrome grille accents, and 17-inch alloy wheels. It suits you if you want more style and a richer feature mix.
• SR Premium: This is the most fully equipped version, with the Bose Personal Plus sound system, surround-view monitor, Prima-Tex seating, and 17-inch black alloy wheels. It is the right pick if you want the most premium Kicks experience.

Every Kicks comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, while SV and SR trims add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.

That price movement suggests the Kicks has become more affordable in the used market, which can help you buy in at a lower cost today. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you may need to be more competitive when it is time to list. Even so, the model’s value-focused positioning and broad appeal should help it remain easy to shop for buyers who want an economical crossover.

Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Kicks or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 refresh brings more features, updated exterior styling, upgraded interior materials, and standard safety and driver assistance equipment.

The bottom line: The 2021 Kicks is the better pick if you want the refreshed look and added equipment without moving up to a pricier crossover. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2021’s stronger feature set and softer pricing make it the more compelling all-around choice for many used buyers.
