Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2021 Kicks is presented as a practical, value-focused crossover with a strong history of few recalls, and its straightforward front-wheel-drive layout keeps the mechanical formula simple. It also leans into everyday dependability with standard driver aids and an easy-to-live-with setup rather than complicated hardware.

Its 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine is tuned for efficiency and everyday use, and the CVT is part of that simple, economy-minded package. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Kicks is still built around modest performance, so you should expect sensible transportation rather than extra power.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Kicks S is the most stripped-back version, while the SV and SR add more comfort and convenience equipment. If you want the most upscale feel, the SR Premium adds the richest feature set, including the Bose audio system, Prima-Tex-appointed seating, and the surround-view monitor.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 Kicks uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower, Nissan’s Xtronic CVT, and front-wheel drive only. It is tuned for efficiency and easy driving rather than strong acceleration.
• Safety package: Every Kicks comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. SV and SR trims add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert.
• Infotainment: The base model gets a 7-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, three USB ports, keyless entry, push-button start, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. SV adds Nissan Intelligent Key, automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, and a USB-C port, while SR Premium adds the class-exclusive Bose Personal Plus sound system and a surround-view monitor.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the Kicks at 7.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.2 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Nissan Kicks trim should I buy?

The 2021 Nissan Kicks is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SR, SR Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and can live with the most basic equipment. You still get the core tech and safety features, but it is the trim most likely to feel sparse if you want more comfort or convenience.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades such as automatic climate control, satellite radio, remote engine start, and Nissan Intelligent Key without jumping all the way to the top model.
• SR: Choose this if you want a more polished look and feel, including 17-inch aluminium-alloy wheels and the added rear disc brakes. It builds on the SV with a sportier presentation and more premium touches.
• SR Premium: This is the most fully equipped version, adding the Bose Personal Plus sound system, Prima-Tex-appointed seating, and the surround-view monitor. It suits you best if you want the most features and the most upscale cabin experience.

Every Kicks comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, and SV and SR trims add extra driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Nissan Kicks?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 282 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.09% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,351 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Nissan Kicks's resale value?

The current average of $17,351 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,737 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you buy now, because you may be entering at a lower cost basis than previous shoppers. For a future seller, the same trend suggests resale values may remain under pressure unless demand strengthens or supply tightens.

The Kicks still has appeal as a practical, value-focused crossover with strong owner satisfaction, which helps support used-market interest. If you keep it in good condition and price it competitively, that broad affordability should help it stay relevant with budget-minded buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Nissan Kicks safe?

The 2021 Kicks earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2021 Kicks comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. Cruise control is also standard, and every model gets 10 airbags.

SV and SR trims add adaptive cruise control, a driver alertness monitor, and rear door alert. One caveat is that the 2021 Kicks has not been crash-tested by IIHS, so you should pay attention to the available safety equipment on the trim you are considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Nissan Kicks or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings a refreshed look, upgraded interior materials, and more features while keeping the same easygoing, value-first character.

The bottom line: If you want the most up-to-date version of this formula, the 2021 model is the one to target because it adds more equipment without losing the Kicks’ simple, affordable appeal. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2021 is the better pick when you want the refreshed design and added features.

How does the 2021 Nissan Kicks compare to the 2021 Mazda CX-30?

The Kicks is the more affordable choice, with a lower average used price and more listings available, while the CX-30 brings more power and a higher starting MSRP.
