What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda MAZDA3?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Premium Package adds the high-definition surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed reverse automatic braking, Traffic Jam Assist, and an Active Driving Display. If you want more convenience and visibility tech, that package is the key step up.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder pairs with a 6-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ AWD. It delivers strong performance and smooth, predictable response, but fuel use can rise if you drive it hard.
• Safety package: Mazda’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and the GT trim adds an Adaptive Front Lighting System. The Premium Package brings GT-exclusive safety features, including Traffic Jam Assist and reverse automatic braking.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. It is not touch-sensitive, and the Premium Package adds an Active Driving Display.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the turbo model averaged 11.5 L/100 km, compared with a Natural Resources Canada estimate of 8.8 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5 Turbo sedan, 2.5 Turbo hatchback, 2.5 Turbo sedan with Premium Package, and 2.5 Turbo hatchback with Premium Package.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 Turbo sedan: This is the least expensive way into the turbocharged model, and it gives you the core performance upgrade, AWD, and the upscale cabin feel that define the car.
• 2.5 Turbo hatchback: Choose this if you want the more aggressive hatchback body style and can live with paying more for it.
• 2.5 Turbo sedan with Premium Package: This is the best-value choice if you want the most useful extra equipment, including the surround-view camera, parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, Traffic Jam Assist, and the head-up display.
• 2.5 Turbo hatchback with Premium Package: Pick this if you want the hatchback body style and the fullest equipment list, but it is the priciest route.

The Premium Package also brings GT-exclusive safety features, so it is the trim path to focus on if safety tech matters most to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda MAZDA3?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 154 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.86% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,914 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $21,308 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,174 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can make future resale more competitive for sellers. If you buy now, you may benefit from the lower entry price, but you should also expect resale values to reflect the same softer trend if the market stays similar. Well-equipped examples with strong condition and desirable features should hold buyer interest better than stripped-down cars.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The Mazda MAZDA3 earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, including rollover resistance.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda’s safety suite is built around driver assistance rather than full automation. Standard features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and the system is designed to keep you engaged while stepping in if needed. The GT trim adds an Adaptive Front Lighting System, and the Premium Package adds a high-definition surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed reverse automatic braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.

Traffic Jam Assist is not a Level 2 system, and you remain in control of steering. Even so, the overall package is smooth and sophisticated, which makes it easier to use in everyday driving.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.86% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The turbocharged 2021 model adds a more powerful, more performance-focused character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,660 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,308 CAD average.
• It adds a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint colour.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2021 if you want the better price and the turbocharged performance story. If you are shopping on a tighter budget, the 2021 is the stronger value play; if you want the newer model year and can pay more, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
