Is the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its fun driving experience, high-quality interior, and fuel efficiency. The expert assessment also describes the car as smooth, predictable, and consistent, and says it becomes a car you can come to know and trust.

Mazda’s ownership experience is helped by the car’s polished engineering and the sense that it behaves consistently over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific car has the equipment and condition you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda MAZDA3?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The turbo model comes with all-wheel drive, and the Premium Package adds features such as a head-up display, a high-definition surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed reverse automatic braking, and Traffic Jam Assist. If you want the most equipment, look for a well-optioned car rather than a stripped example.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder pairs with a 6-speed automatic transmission and delivers strong performance with smooth, predictable response. It is tuned for driving enjoyment rather than outright aggression.
• Safety package: Mazda’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and the GT trim adds an Adaptive Front Lighting System. The Premium Package brings extra safety equipment that is exclusive to the GT model.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. The screen is not touch-sensitive, so you should make sure you are comfortable with the control layout.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the car averaged 11.5 litres per 100 kilometres, while Natural Resources Canada estimates 8.8 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 1 trim level: 2.5 Turbo.

Here's the short version:

The 2.5 Turbo is the one to buy if you want the strongest performance, standard all-wheel drive, and the most premium feel in the lineup. It suits you best if you care more about driving enjoyment and upscale equipment than about keeping the purchase as simple or inexpensive as possible.

The Premium Package is worth seeking out if you want the added safety and convenience features, especially the head-up display and surround-view camera.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda MAZDA3?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop with a clear target and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 175 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.20% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,924 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $21,278 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,695 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you are buying now, but it also means future resale upside may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the current trend suggests you should focus on buying well so you have less depreciation to absorb.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, including rollover resistance.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda’s driver-assistance suite is designed to support the driver rather than replace them. Standard and available features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, automatic high beams, an Adaptive Front Lighting System on the GT trim, and, with the Premium Package, a high-definition surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed reverse automatic braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.

Traffic Jam Assist is not a Level 2 system, so you remain in control of steering. The safety package is strong overall, but some of the more advanced features are tied to higher equipment levels.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 adds turbocharged performance and a more upscale, driver-focused character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,450 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,278 CAD average.
• It adds a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint colour.

The bottom line: If you want the better value right now, the 2021 is the stronger buy because prices have eased and the model still delivers standout style, safety, and driving enjoyment. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model year and a fresh paint option, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative.

How does the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 compare to the 2021 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 8.3/10 and the 2021 Honda Civic 7.2/10. The Mazda gives you the stronger expert score, while the Civic has the slight edge in engine output and fuel economy figures. The Mazda also has a much smaller pool of listings, so you may need to search harder for the right example. If you want the more distinctive, better-rated choice, the Mazda is the pick; if you want broader inventory, the Civic is easier to shop.
