What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and XSE bring sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, a subtle body kit, a twin-outlet exhaust, and 18-inch aluminium wheels, while the L, LE, and XLE are the more anonymous choices. The SE and XSE also add a more powerful engine, different transmissions, and a Sport driving mode.
• Powertrain: The SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The SE can be paired with a six-speed manual, while the CVT adds paddle shifters and a mechanical first gear.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are standard this year, and the available blind-spot warning system gains rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are standard. The SE gets an 8-inch touchscreen, while the standard display is 7 inches. The XSE adds Service Connect, Safety Connect, Remote Connect, navigation, Destination Assist, and a one-year trial for connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla XSE should use 7.0 L/100 km combined, with 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway.

Which 2021 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest path into the Corolla lineup if you want the lowest-frills version and are mainly focused on basic transportation.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it keeps the Corolla’s core strengths while avoiding the higher cost of the sportier grades.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla and are willing to pay more for comfort-oriented equipment.
• SE: This is the sweet spot if you want the Corolla’s more engaging personality, sportier styling, and the option of a manual transmission.
• XSE: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped gas Corolla, along with the strongest mix of style, features, and performance-oriented hardware.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so even the lower trims get a strong safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 570 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.84% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,667 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $20,670 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,429 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also suggests future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy at today’s average, there is less room for a dramatic price drop than there was a year ago, which can help support resale stability.

The Corolla’s reputation for reliability and strong owner satisfaction should continue to support demand when it is time to sell. That kind of broad appeal usually helps a used car hold attention in the market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2021 Corolla earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, bringing adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard this year, and the available blind-spot warning system adds rear cross-traffic alert.

The main caveat is that the latest crash-test ratings are not included here, so you should confirm the exact result for the specific trim and equipment you are considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends affordability, reliability, efficiency, and a more engaging personality than many compact commuters.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,528 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $20,670 CAD average.
• It introduced a more stylish and enjoyable character to the Corolla nameplate.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,320 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $20,670 CAD average.
• It adds two new colours and keeps the Corolla’s broad range of body styles, transmissions, and powertrains.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of value, features, and owner satisfaction. If price is your top priority, the 2020 is the cheaper route; if you want a slightly newer model-year alternative and do not mind paying more, the 2022 is the next step up.
